I received this book today as part of the Not So Secret Valentine Surprise on BCUK. Thank you so much to Fredam for this parcel. :o) I also got 2 other Sue Grafton books, a box of chocolates and 2 very nice candles.

Thank you... :o) You've really brightened my day.

I hope to read this book very soon.

Synopsis

'Female, age thirty-two, self-employed and wiser than she used to be. For Kinsey Millhone, private investigator, only one thing stays the same. When a client sits down in the chair across the desk, she never knows what's going to happen next...' There was nothing about Beverly Danziger to cause Kinsey concern. She was looking for her sister. There was a will to be settled. She paid up front. And if it seemed a lot of money for a routine job, Kinsey wasn't going to argue. She kicked herself later for the things she didn't see - Beverly Danziger did not look as if she needed a few thousand dollars and she didn't seem like someone longing for a family reunion. But just as Kinsey begins to suspect foul play and start asking questions, Beverly Danziger pulls her off the case and fires her...

I've just finished reading this book. I started it yesterday afternoon and have barely been able to put it down since! I've been trying to read this series in order but have occasionally read some out of sequence as and when the books have been offered to me. But I recently read "A is for Alibi" and have acquired most of the other books so am now trying to read the remaining books in the correct order.

"B" is one of my favourites to date, it was compulsive reading. It was nice to see Mike appear as I think he does turn up in a later book, so a few more pieces were fitted together for me about how Kinsey came to meet him. The story was good, it had a nice pace to it. There were no parts that dragged and at the same time the end didn't appear rushed. I liked how I was just one step ahead of Kinsey all the way through but that I never knew enough to guess what was going on too early.

It's been a while since I picked up a book from this series but I'm in the right mood to want to read more. Thanks to fredam I also have "C is for Corpse" and am very tempted to go start reading that now! :o)

Thanks again fredam for giving me this book. I have offered it on bookcrossinguk as a ring so hopefully it'll get some more readers. If there are no takers I'll offer it on the forums.

Received from sunflowergirl.

I'm hoping to read these in order and 'A' is only one person away from me and its the same person who will want this after me so hopefully I won't get into trouble if I sit on it for a bit.

I liked this 'mystery' working some of it out before the end but not the 'how' or 'who'. Kinsey is realistic too though she seemed to have bounced back pretty quickly after shooting her boyfriend in 'A is for Alibi'only 2 weeks before.

Sue Grafton's similes are a bit unusual in places which I have found a bit distracting as I'm looking for them now. For example (and I opened the book at random and found this one) 'The house was as dark as the inside of a soup can...' well, why not I suppose.

Why do all mystery/thriller heroines run 3 miles before breakfast and then eat donuts? I've read 3 books recently by different authors in which this happens - Kinsey, Stephanie Plum (Janet Evanovich) and Lindsay Boxer (James Patterson). I obviously need to eat more donuts - not sure about the running though!

Off to bluejazzyfish!

Arrived yesterday, thank you Missprisy :-)

I started it in the middle of the night because I couldn't sleep, and I'd just finished my latest bedtime book! Quite like the style so, no doubt, will finish it very quickly.

Thanks also to SunflowerGirl too for setting up the Ray. I can already see the series becoming addictive!

It was pretty easy to keep turning the pages (nice short chapters!) and, as others have suggested, the whodunit is guessable but not a long way ahead of being told. The plot is reasonably believable though Kinsey appears to be fairly typical of fictional female PIs (and female pathologists on UK telly) in that she doesn't know when to back off!

There were a few unanswered questions to her background but I presume they would be covered in A is for Alibi.

Descriptive text tends to bore me in this genre ('just get on with the story!') but fortunately it didn't exceed my boredom threshold – I only skipped a few paragraphs here and there.

Although this is the first one I have read, I had a sense that Grafton was feeling her way a bit with the style - especially the dry humour which was a bit patchy/ inconsistent. Hopefully this will improve with the series.
"You goddam bitch!" She slammed the door behind her, eyes flashing.

I'm not real fond of being addressed like that. I could feel the heat rise in my cheeks, my temper climbing automatically. I wondered if she was going to challenge me to hand-to-hand combat. I gave her a slow smile just to show her I wasn't impressed with the histrionics.

"What's the problem, Beverly?" I sounded like a smart aleck even to myself and I thought I better cast about for something to smite her with if she came flying across the desk at me. All I spotted was an unsharpened pencil and a Rolodex.

Overall, I enjoyed B is for Burglar and will certainly look out for more Grafton, though not energetically.

I assume I'm now sending it back to the US of A but will check with SunflowerGirl first.

At last, managed to get this back in the post - to b-flat-78 (USA) - today.

Sorry about the delay, though I think that getting a new rescue dog (14 months old and very bouncy) is a reasonable excuse :-)

Candy-is-Dandy has kindly offered to lend me the first of the series (we see each other at the Chelmsford meets) so I'll be able to read the rest in order, hopefully.
