Set in the barbecue sauce capital of Texas, this novel follows Vernon Gregory after a disaster at his school which most people believe he was involved in. The characters in the story are so bizarre and beautifully portrayed with a subtle surrealism that can only come from the narrative of a fifteen-year-old boy.
Winner of the Whitbread Best First Novel Award in 2003, I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys funny narratives and slightly twisted insights on the modern America.

What a fantastic read. I was actually amazed by this book, which hasn't happened for a while. I really thought it would be whiney and a little too "Catcher in the Rye" for me but this was just so witty. Even the swearing didn't get to me in the way that it usually does.
I'm going to buy a new copy of this to go in my Permanent Collection but in the meantime it is being RABCKed to its new home with bookcrosser chocolatemummy!

It took me along time to get into this book, not sure wht, maybe the style of writing, maybe my mood. When I did it was definintely worth it, and I enjoyed the surreal turns of his adventures!
I've got an address to RABCK this on to and am off to the PO in the morning! THanks for sharing this one

I lovely gift in the post this morning - the first morning I have got out of bed in two days after having flu! I hope to recouperate and reduce mount toobie at the same time so hopefully I'll get to read it really soon. Thank you for the RABCK
Hmmm, I'm in two minds about this. I wasn't fully concentrating when I started it (I read lots of small chuncks rather than givng myself time to get into it) and it didn't really grab me. I could appreciate it was really well written and there were some lovely descriptions, it just didn't bowl me over. Probably a case of the right book at the wrong time!
I'll take it to the unconvention, unless anybody claims it first, to be released there.
Thank you for the RABCK though chocolatemummy
