I'm not very familuar with the story of MacBeth but this book interested me. Once I got into the story, putting the book down was quite difficult. In fact I ignored starting to pack for my vacation once I hit the 50 pages left mark so that I could finish the book. I need to go read up on the story of MacBeth and look into buying myself a personal copy of this book. Mailing to karendawn as part of a bookrelay. Mailed 8/15/03

Journal Entry 7 by karendawn from Lafayette, Indiana USA on Thursday, October 09, 2003
I finished read this book this morning. It took me a little while to get into it, but the last pages were really good and I couldn't put it down. Overall, I liked this book and am happy to have had the chance to read it, but there were some things that I didn't like. The major thing was the main character, Gilly. To me, she just wasn't a very likeable person. I think she could have been, but she just wouldn't let herself be. She eventually grew on me and I was concerned about what would happen to her in the end, but she sometimes seemed too whiny and too much interested in revenge and nothing else. It's been a while since I've read MacBeth, but so many scenes from the play kept coming back to me and it was fun to see them from another point of view. I see from the interview with the author in the back of the book that she has written a retelling of Hamlet from Ophelia's point of view. I'll have to look into that one.

Journal Entry 11 by Deerskin from Aberystwyth, Wales United Kingdom on Tuesday, November 18, 2003
I really enjoyed this - I loved the way the story slotted so neatly into the story of Macbeth and filled in the 'gaps' about the the witches; their lives and motives for doing what they did. I found Gilly a great character, despite her whinyness - though I did have the occasional urge to shake her! I loved the other 'new' characters and the idea of her background. I would have liked to see another side to Macbeth, who I have always liked as a character - I found Gilly's opinion of him dominated the book (not surprising since it's from her point of view!); however I can see that the character shown was necessary for the story and did not deviate from Shakespeare's portrayal of him. All in all, a great read! I will definately be looking out for the Ophelia story too. Will be sending this on as soon as I can, probably in the next few days.

Journal Entry 12 by starbytes from Calgary, Alberta Canada on Tuesday, December 09, 2003
Received this book today! It looks really interesting and I can't wait to start on it! Thanks, Deerskin! Will journal again when I finish! Update 12th December 2003: Gilly is a moron! :P And sometimes I think so's the author. She conveniently writes Gilly as smart and intelligent and really likeable at times, and at others, makes her a complete moron, whiny and self-centered and really idiotic. Reisert isn't very consistent on Gilly's character IMO, and now that I've read this and can compare to Reisert's Ophelia's Revenge, I can see the same pattern. Ophelia and Gilly are both inconsistent in their characters, making stupid decisions not because they're stupid, but because Reisert said they had to. That's the feeling I get. Which is a real pity because otherwise Reisert is a very talented author. She has real talent for imagination and storyline, I just hate that she makes the heroines do stupid things that makes me think, idiots! *g* I still enjoyed the book for all that. :") Will PM monast for her address!!

I disagree with Starbytes. I kind of like the way the book is written. In the perspective of a young girl with a mind of a child. A mind that has stunted its maturity by its need for revenge. Yeap.. definitely worth the read. Hope you like it Hathyia
