From Publishers Weekly:

"In this fascinating sociocultural report, Schlosser digs into the deeper meaning of Burger King, Auggie's, The Chicken Shack, Jack-in-the-Box, Little Caesar's and myriad other examples of fast food in America. Frequently using McDonald's as a template, Schlosser, an Atlantic Monthly correspondent, explains how the development of fast-food restaurants has led to the standardization of American culture, widespread obesity, urban sprawl and more. In a perky, reportorial voice, Adamson tells of the history, economics, day-to-day dealings and broad and often negative cultural implications of franchised burger joints and pizza factories, delivering impressive snippets of information (e.g., two-thirds of America's fast-food restaurant employees are teenagers; Willard Scott posed as the first Ronald McDonald until higher-ups decided Scott was too round to represent a healthy restaurant like McDonald's). According to Schlosser, most visits to fast-food restaurants are the culinary equivalent of "impulse buys," i.e., someone is driving by and pulls over for a Big Mac. But anyone listening to this audiobook on a car trip and realizing that the Chicken McNugget turned "a bird that once had to be carved at a table" into "a manufactured, value-added product" will think twice about stopping for a snack at the highway rest stop."

arrived safe and sound -- I have a few to read before it but will not be too long -- I will comment once I have read the book and then send it off to the next person in line for it.

April 26 -- Update -- I am now on page 142 -- this one is taking me longer to read than usual -- I think due to all the facts and I am having a hard time reading it for any length of time -- usually 1/2 a chapter at a time. I will continue to update status. Pm'd "rangerfan" for an address so that I can send it as soon as I am done it.

April 28 -- Update -- on page 177 -- have received "rangerfan" (s) address and will send the book along as soon as I am done with it.

May 04 -- Update -- on page 226

May 06 -- I just finished wading through this book. In all honesty it was not what I had expected when I heard great reviews for the book. I thought the book was just alright. It was very informative but maybe too many facts -- it was hard to digest all of them at once. I didn't really learn anything that I didn't already know. I am grateful for the opportunity to read this book.

I recieved this on a book ring read it pretty much in one day.Whether you agree with all of his ideas on politics and eonomics or not, Schlosser is the kind of writer who can make statistics on franchises, discussions on e. Coli and the science of food flavoring interesting--quite an accompishment. In afterward to this(a later addition)he said that one of the most frequent complaints about the book was its anti-business and anti-Republican bias, and that is evident(why I gave the book a 9 instead of a 10) But for the most part, I think he tries to be fair, and certainly scientific. For example he acknowledges that food irradiation has been proven harmless(something that irresponsible out-and-out health food nuts won't acknowledge.)He has other others issues with food irradiation, as I do. Probably the most memorable parts of the book are the personal stories, such as that of Colorado rancher Hank, and Monfort meatpacking plant worker Kenny Dobbins.

Thanks, I received the book! I'll start reading it right away.

Journal Entry 16 by Nitku from Akaa, Pirkanmaa / Birkaland Finland on Monday, September 25, 2006
Sorry for the long delay, I've been on vacation for a while. I did read the book though, some gruesome facts there that feel quite uncomfortable. Good thing I haven't worked in the meat business and have little to do with meat altogether. I enjoyed the author's writing style, he just presented the facts and left the rest to the reader, in contrast to Michael Moore who states his opinions very strongly.

I'll send the book to the next reader this week.

Journal Entry 17 by Mergylien from Pyhäjärvi, Pohjois-Pohjanmaa / Norra Österbotten Finland on Sunday, October 1, 2006
I got this book on friday. I try to read it as soon as I can.

I liked the style of writing in the Fast Food Nation. Book was really interesting. Only the potatoe part of the book was little bit boring.

Journal Entry 18 by Margih from Tampere, Pirkanmaa / Birkaland Finland on Wednesday, November 8, 2006
Sorry, sorry, I forgot to make a JE! Have too many things in my mind and also on the table... Anyway, the book arrived already somedays ago, thanks.
