I picked this book up for free at the MLA book exhibit. I'd been curious about Maguire for a while. I found the first 200 pages or so absolutely riveting, and then my interest began to wane; by the last few pages, I was ready to be finished. The best aspects of this novel is how it fleshes out the world of Oz, giving it a fascinating political complexity. I thought that the world-making was a million times more interesting that the philosophical question of "evil," which many readers seem to think is the heart of the book. The thing is, Elphaba is such an interesting and well-drawn character from the beginning that the question of whether or not she is "evil" didn't even occur to me as I was reading; the story is too successful at making her a person to really bother with the irony of her notoriety as the "Wicked Witch of the West." It seemed pretty clear that it's simply a politically motivated misnomer.

I'm going to make this my first wild release of 2006.
