Jack Twist and Ennis del Mar are two ranch hands -- 'drop-out country boys with no prospects, brought up to hard work and privation, both rough-mannered, tough spoken' -- glad to have found each other's company where none had been expected.

This is a wonderful story. It is very short, told in sparse, clear language - I wish it had been longer as I loved it so much.

Received from wilksie today. A couple of bookrings have landed on me all at the same time, so I'll start reading this as soon as I can! Thanks :)

A great story which I wish had been longer. There's some real depth of emotion here despite the stark imagery of life as a ranch-hand. I really enjoyed this, and must hunt out a copy for myself!

Mailing onto scotsbookie today. :)

Another who wishes this book had been longer! A wonderful story, with a depth of emotion that brought tears to my eyes.

Thank you wilksie for the chance to read this.

Have PM'd kitkat8 for her details.

Book received today from Scotsbookie this morning. This is my first bookring so I am a little over excited. I am really looking forward to reading this, but just have another book to finish off before I start.

Journal Entry 9 by riverwillow from Beckenham, Greater London United Kingdom on Friday, February 10, 2006
This about as near a perfect short story as I have read. It feels like a prose poem where Annie Proulx has slaved over the placing of every word in order to convey rich emotion in a sparse environment. Loved it.

Have posted the book to YowlYY today (life did not go to plan last week!)

Journal Entry 11 by YowlYY on Wednesday, February 15, 2006
The book arrived safe and sound this morning, with a lovely postcard (note to self: must scan it and upload the pic here for all to see :) ) - it is really very short, so it shouldn't be long until it starts moving again. Thanks!

Journal Entry 12 by YowlYY on Friday, February 17, 2006
I am usually not for short stories: I found that I need the "cushioning" of 50-100 pages in order to get in touch with the protagonists, to understand them and enter their world. Anne Proulx, however, manages to make you feel with the harsh world of the two men from the beginning - and it is a bit of a surprise when you find out that you've just turned the last page, and the story is over.
I am yet to see the film... I wonder if it is going to be a delusion, like in the majority of books made into films?

Thanks again to wilksie for sharing this with us - it will be passed on to ReetPetite tomorrow, during the Nottingham Meetup at Cafe' Costa.

A very powerful story. Annie Proulx is a brilliant writer, some of her phrases are amazing like 'he missed Ennis bad enough sometimes to make him whip babies'. I didn't want any more to the story, I think it was about both of them and the ending was right.
I'd like to read it again in a few years.

I've PMed niccijl for their address.

Bookring received. Only small so I shouldn't be too long.

I really enjoyed this, and managed to read it in one sitting last night. I found the prose style a little difficult at first, especially when she wrote in dialect, but quickly got over this. A beautifully simple, yet sad love story.

I'm now just waiting for purplerosebud's address and I'll forward it on.

Thanks for sharing.

Arrived in the post today from niccijl, many thanks and I've read it this evening. An excellent short story which I found rather sad. Thank you for sharing.

I will be sending it on to safrolistics as soon as I have the address.

Received today, I've got a book to finish before I can start on this one though!

Just waiting for andthings address and then I'll post it on, certainly was a quick read!

At first I found some of the dialect writting a little hard to follow, but soon got into it, I'm quite interested to see how the film works, and no, I don't think it would of worked as well as a longer book.

Arrived sometime in the past couple of days. I'll try and read it this week and get it posted again at the weekend if I can.

Journal Entry 22 by andthings on Saturday, July 22, 2006
This wasn't what I was expecting, it is just a 50ish page short story. Not an amazing short story, but more like a premise, I guess that is how the movie grew out of the book. I haven't seen it yet but I will try and track it down now. I'm glad I read it but not what I was expecting.

Putting in the post today

Received this morning, thank you. Despite being in the middle of another book (and having a couple of other rings to read) this is so short that I think I will sit in the garden this afternoon and polish it off.

Arrived safely this morning.

Like most of the other readers, I wanted the book to be longer. An enjoyable little story though that took less than an afternoon to read. I really must get round to watching the film. I have Droogie's address so this will go in the post later today

I really enjoyed this. It took no time at all to read and it seemed to use just enough words to convey the powerful emotions - in just the same way as the characters barely spoke about what they were experiencing, even though it seemed to be one of their most significant experiences. I liked it this way, it was short but it moved me a lot more than I think it could have done if it went into more detail and it conveyed their lonliness and emptyness well.

Thanks for sharing

Arrived safe and sound, and should be a quick read.

Many thanks!

This is a wonderfully passionate and heartbreaking story. I haven't seen the film and I'm not even sure I want to see it - the writing is so visual and emotional that I don't think a film could do it justice.

The book is on its way back home to wilksie. Many thanks!
