From back of the book:

The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian sheperd boy who travels in search of a worldly treasure. From his home in Spain he jouneys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist.

The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams.

This book didn't change my life like it claimed it would, but still a good book to have read. What made the book enjoyable for me was the fact that it was set in a part of the world I hope to travel to.

Paul Coelho is a best selling self-help fabler. This book is an easy read with many of life lessons woven through it. I have been to Rio de Janerio, Brazil where the author lives so I feel some small connection to him. If you like self-help fable books such as the Celestine Prophecy then you'll probably enjoy this one.
