After purchasing this book I read that the author may be prosecuted as a criminal for his treatment of Turkish history.
Orham Pamuk is amazingly skillful at placing the reader within the scene of narrative through the use of meticulous detail. I found that aspect of his work stunning.
Unfortunately, I found the reading of this deeply complex tale to require a fortitude I did not possess at the time.
I'd like to have this book move along to its next reader, and hope that he or she will be able to enjoy Pamuk's work as well as it deserves.

I received this book along with several others as a RABCK, thanks so much for offering such a great box! I am looking forward to reading them and then passing them on.
The main character, a poet, returns to his hometown in Turkey to write a story about girls committing suicide over the right or denial to wear a headscarf. He becomes involved in the political and religious turmoil simply by being there. The story portrays the life of the poet, his love affair, and his passion to write poetry amidst the fundamentalist struggle for power.
It is a good read.
Now ready for a new reader

from a big box of books. Thanks!
I read this as a ray in 2010. From my notes:
Long, tough read. It took me 3/4 of the book to finally figure out that the narrator was the author, and the last chapters FINALLY pulled things together. I didn't like the protagonist (he was so lifeless, weary and dull), nor any of the other characters, who all had their own hidden agendas.
Added note: I wonder if I had a Kindle at the time, if that would have helped. If the book has X-ray and reviews, I often use that for difficult books.
