This is a fantastic lil book about one indian student from a small town in India who leaves his country inorder to get a degree in an American University.

It takes you through the quirks of being an immigrant in America, with the initial surprise reactions to the culture, women, food and language right to the acceptance of racisim, honour and ultimately self discovery.
I read this book a few years ago...loved it!

I finished reading this book during the weekend, and I really enjoyed it. It was very funny and funnily described the differences between Indian and American culture. I also enjoyed the way it was written, sometimes the language was really Indian style, and sometimes you could really see how the Yanks speak.:) The only thing that I didn't find nice in the book was the constant chasing of the girls, I felt that the reader kind of got the point already in the beginning of the book and there was thus no reason to continue this theme. But it continued, and so it took away some of the stars.

But, however, there was many nice moments in this book that I really enjoyed reading, below I put some of them. Somehow when reading this book I also started to hope that besides being funny it would show also something for not only to Americans, but also other "westeners", and make us think more about our cultures. Do we really want to sell and advertise everything with by using sexuality? Or do we really meet our families mostly just during the Christmas breaks?

But I really loved the ways Gopal wrote his letters to his brother, here's a piece of one:

"Beloved younger brother,

Greetings to respectful parents. I am hoping all is well with health and wealth. I am fine at my end. Hoping your end is fine too. With God's grace and parents' blessings I am arriving safely in America and finding good apartment near University. Kindly assure mother that I am strictly consuming vegetarian food only in restaurants though I am not knowing if cooks are Brahmins. I hope parents' prayers are residing with me. "

And there was so many nice descrpitions about how opening a tin can descripes so well and deeply America, what are the meanings of chewing a bubble gum in different manners, etc, etc... And then this lovely moment with snow:

"Snow, Gopal thought with a schock. Goodness me, they are having snow.
He had never seen snow before expect in photographs where it lay like a skin of some dead white beast on the ground. He had not realised it danced with such joy through the air, with the beauty of a ballet dancer..."

Thank you once more gussy916, I'll try to let this little book continue its journey safely with some other caring bookcrosser!

Many thanks to katyan for kindly replying my request and to gussy916 for sending the book to Finland. Theme of the book seems to be similar than one in Fasting, Feasting. Unfortunately I have a couple of books to read before this, but I'm looking forward getting to read this.

This was very different to Fasting, Feasting. The Inscrutable Americans was very funny and heartwarming to read. Gopal and Randy were such nice guys. I quite agree with Katyan and don't repeat same things in my journal entry. I hope I can find a good new home to this enjoyable book.

wow, this book has certainly travelled the world! and it hasn't even been in the two countries it is about :)
i received this as a rabck from dotdot, who drew my name for postcrossing and decided to send me a book as well! sweet, hey?
it took me forever to collect the book from the post office (they found it too big for the post box?! well at least it is not damaged now) as i was doing a two week course with the same hours as that post office has. sorry about that!
