What does an "Anita Blake - Vampire Hunter" - Fan do after reading the last book in the series? And it's still a long time until the new one comes out? Sure, I could re-read all of them, but that's no fun yet. So - let's investigate what else Mrs. Hamilton has written...

That's how I discovered the novels about fairy princess Meredith NicEssus, also know as Merry Gentry. Let's see, what do we have here: mystical creatures, crime, intruiges, fairy politics, lots of juicy sex and all the men are studs... Yes, I think I'll like that! ;-) Hell, that's why I read fantasy, no need to be realistic! LOL

This is the first book in the series.

From amazon.com
"Erotica is fantasy, but it rarely gets as fantastic as this. After nine novels featuring Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter (Obsidian Butterfly, etc.), Hamilton launches a sizzling new series that blends supernatural fantasy with detective adventure and hot sex. Here, the world is populated with various magical faerie races along with humans. The most supreme of the fey are the immortal sidhe, so beautiful and powerful they were once worshiped as gods. The fey are not only lusty but incredibly accomplished lovers; those of the royal sidhe bloodline are literally addictively sexy. Full-blooded fey are, for the most part, intolerant of cities, metal and technology. They seldom live for long among humans. Mixed-blood Princess Meredith NicEssus, however, has fled the faerie world to pass for three years as Merry Gentry, a human with some fey blood who works in Los Angeles with a detective agency that specializes in supernatural problems and magical solutions. Suddenly outed as the missing princess and fearing that her aunt, the Queen of Air and Darkness, will kill her, she makes a desperate run aided by her detective pals. The queen does want her, but not in the way Merry expects. Ultimately, Meredith must fulfill the queen's designs for the future of her court, even if it means having to bed the most beautiful studs in the universe. Through constant danger and adventure, Meredith finds herself in a variety of sexual encounters that make it easy to see why her ancestors were so worthy of worship. As wild as the novel's premise is, memorable characters and wicked wit make it all delicious, ribald fun."

The first three books of the Merry Gentry series will be made into an international bookring with a rather special shipping arrangement. Please check every single book separately for the shipping order.

Some guidelines:
1. Please journal the book when it arrives (so we know it's safe and sound with you), once you read it (to let us know how you liked it) and when you ship it off (so we know it's on its way to the next reader).

2. Please PM the next person in line before shipping the books off, not only for the adress, but also to ask if they are still interested in the ring!

3. Surface shipping is perfectly acceptable.

4. Try not to take longer than four weeks per book.

5. And the most important thing: Have fun!

Here are the participants so far in shipping order:

*****
This is the first of the Meredith Gentry series. I've heard rave reviews about this, but I guess I don't quite grok the hype. It's a fun little (well, LONG) book, and extremely creative, but the characters just left me flat. I'm going to read the second book in the series and see if it picks up any - some series really hit their stride with the later books - and I'm sure it will be enjoyable.

I liked it, though definitely not as much as the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter ones...
It sometimes seems to get lost in a bit too many hot scenes, the plot in the first half loses its edge and suspence, but the second half grabbed me with its quickest pace and I ended up wanting for more! ;)
I'd say Merry is everything that Anita is not (though they do share a few things...)... a bit of a change, and also challenging for their author, I guess!

I'm sending this to cathepsut today or tomorrow!

From Amazon.com:
"My name is Meredith Gentry, but of course it's not my real name. I dare not even whisper my true name after dark for fear that one hushed word will travel over the night winds to the soft ear of my aunt, the Queen of Air and Darkness. She wants me dead. I don't even know why... I fled the high court of Faerie three years ago and have been in hiding ever since. As Merry Gentry, I am a private investigator for the Grey Detective Agency: Supernatural Problems, Magical Solutions. My magical skills, scorned at the courts of Faerie, are valued in the human world. Even by human standards, my magic isn't flashy, which is fine by me. Flashy attracts attention and I can't afford that. Rumour has it that I am dead. Not quite. I am Princess Meredith NicEssus. To speak that name after dark is to call down a knock upon your door from a hand that can kill you with a touch. I have been careful, but not careful enough. The shadows have found me, and they are going to take me back home, one way or another. So the running is over. But the fighting has just begun... "

It started very promising. The usual humour and an interesting storyline, although not quite a gritty as Anita Blake. Up until the point, when she goes home. From the onwards it just seemed to be Merry Gentry considering who looks the most stunning, what their clothes look like and how good they might be in bed. Hm. It wasn't actually bad, but a bit disappointing. More sleuthing would have been nice. Well, let's see how #2 turns out, there is room for improvement!
