I bought this lovely first edition hardcover at my local, wonderful used book store. I have the movie in my Netflix queue and my own personal rule is that I MUST read the book before I see the movie so...I'm reading the book. I will pass this lovely book on to another bookcrosser as soon as I'm finished.

Whew! I spent the week in a tither reading this book. Even though it is a novel, some things bear a ring of truth that lets you know that only names, places and times have been changed in the telling. John Le Carre does a wonderful job of telling a story that will, most likely, be dismissed by conservatives as being HIGHLY FICTIONAL and embraced by others, like myself, who know that he has just made us look at much of what is wrong with our world today. Not being from the UK made it a little hard on me in places...not knowing expressions, political hierarchies, geography and such...but the wonderful writing made it worth looking up things like "perambulator"...who knew?
I had not ever heard of this book before the movie came out. I haven't watched the movie yet...it's coming out on DVD this week...so I got the book to fulfill my rule of ALWAYS reading the book first.
I am humbled by the amount of research the author would have had to do to put together the seemless story of British Foreign Serviceman stationed in Africa whose wife is murdered while in the pursuit of exposing human rights violations.
I am currently looking for a new home for this book.
