Dick Francis writes mysteries set in the world of horse-racing. In this story, the son of a trainer fills in while his father is in hospital; but the task is complicated by a rich and ruthless man who insists that his son must become a winning jockey or he will destroy the business.

I put this down for a while and then picked it up and read it right through to the end. In essence, it's about the relationships between sons and their difficult fathers. I'm going to try more books by this author.
I think that the author echoes Gavin Lyall's world-weary, shades-of-grey voice.
