Bala S. K. Saho on syntynyt Salikenyessä, Gambiassa. The Road to my Village on kertomus gambialaisen kylän tapahtumista ja muutoksesta.

Bala Saho was born in 1963 in Salikenye. From 1987 to 1990, he studied in Finland and graduated with a B.A. and a Masters degree in Economics and Social History. Bala Saho works for the Department of State for Culture in different capacities as curator of the Museum and now as Principal Cultural Officer, Research and Documentation. He is also lecturing History at the University of the Gambia. He published two books. The first is a short novel entitled The Road To My Village and the second, Songs Of A Foraging Bird, is a collection of poems.

The Road To My Village was published in Helsinki in 1994. It is a novel of 80 pages. Musa, the hero, has just completed secondary school but cannot find a job. So he decides to go to Europe. What are the implications of such a decision? Is he going to abandon his love Majula, his friends and family? Will he come back to the village or deny his origins? Before going to Europe, however, Musa comes back to his native village and lives a life different from that of his parents. A deep meditation on the return journey with the firm resolution to live in the village without blindly copying the parents’ mode of life.

Aika hienoa!

I just finished reading this little book, and was left with mixed feelings. Somehow I really appreciated the opportunity to read this story from Gambia & enjoyed the atmosphere in the small African village, but on the other hand there was something missing in the story telling that didn't give the reader the usuall depth of this kind of stories. I really liked the story, but somehow expected a bit more.
But this small book will travel to tintti next, we'll meet in two weeks. Thank you for sharing it, Sirah!

I didn't like this book much. It's not very well written, the story is clumsy and characters thin. I read it only because it was so short, and because of my book from every country challenge.

Anyway, thanks to Sirah for letting me read this!

Kiitos Sirah, mielenkiintoisesta Afrikka-kirjasta.

This book counts for Gambia in my A Book From Every Country Challenge.

Siksi kirja tuntuikin nostalgiselta. Tuli mieleen nuoruus ja kaupunkiin muutto 17-vuotiaana. Kiitos kirjasta, Sirah! Gambia tuli kuitattua Kirja jokaisesta maasta -haasteessani.

This book is my #61 in Keep Them Moving Challenge by Guinaveve
