Paul Carter has been shot at, hijacked and held hostage.

He's almost died of dysentery in Asia and toothache in Russia, watched a Texan lose his mind in the jungles of Asia, lost a lot of money backing a mouse against a scorpion in a fight to the death, and been served cocktails by an orang-utan on an ocean freighter. And that's just his day job.

Taking postings in some of the world's wildest and most remote regions, not to mention some of the roughest oil rigs on the planet, Paul has worked, gotten into trouble and been given serious talkings to in locations as far-flung as the North Sea, Middle East, Borneo and Tunisia, as exotic as Sumatera, Vietnam and Thailand, and as flat out dangerous as Columbia, Nigeria and Russia, with some of the maddest, baddest and strangest people you could ever hope not to meet.

Strap yourself in for an exhilarating, crazed, sometimes terrifying, usually bloody funny ride through one man's adventures in the oil trade.

Arrived in the mail today (Monday). I couldn't resist and dove in with wild abandon, headlong and oh my! What a great raconteur Paul Carter is.

Yes, he works on the rigs, but he also strives to have a life apart from his work. Sections of this were heartbreaking, but most were hysterical. While reading one particularly raucous passage, I laughed aloud and it was all I could do not to, well, suffice it to say, this is a very entertaining book. I had to re-read sections of a couple of chapters to someone who was intrigued to hear of such a funny, free-wheeling book. I was asked to read more at another time -- a request I will likely honor.

Although I'm not yet finished, I predict I soon will be.

Absolutely fantastic read.

Throughout my life, I've heard tales about the hard-working off-shore drillers. Tales, mind you. That's why I wanted to read this book so. The area in which I now live has some off-shore service companies and there are some rigs relatively near by. The only contact I've personally had with one of these guys was on a night when an acquaintence invited me to hear a touring band in a dive bar. The most drunk guy in the place had three things to say, well, scream, all night long -- "Whooooooooooo!" "Hell yeah, brutha!" and "I just got off the rig!" After reading Carter's book, this guy was no doubt tame and gentlemanly in comparison to some of his coworkers and companions.

Not good reading for lunch breaks. Uh, no. And not for the squeamish.

The only problem with the book is that when it ended, it ended. In that regard, the structure was more like a collection of stories. The ending was not unlike when that guy in the bar telling story after story stands up having finished his beer. The beer is gone. So are the stories. And he walks out with you and others sitting there, scratching your heads and left wanting more.

Very good, funny book. The part where he has an abcess on his tooth is laugh-out-loud funny. The story of the author and his colleagues contracting dysentry had me stifling giggles on the train.

Paul Carter has been to so many countries, met so many wierd and wonderful people, been close to so many near-death experiences, and has written a very entertaining book about them all.

Have contacted Semming for an address to send this gem on to.

This was a highly entertaining book - I just loved the style of writing! The collection of stories was just perfect, simply short and well told tales about the big adventures of a small human. Stories like these are told every day, but the quality of this set surprised me. I couldn't help laughing out loud more than once, both for pity and joy... Again, this is one of those books I'd probably never read without BC, but I'm sure glad I got a chance!

Thanks for the ring, I've contacted the next person!
