Journal Entry 1 by montuckyhome from Missoula, Montana USA on Monday, January 02, 2006
One could find this book on the shelves in literature or scifi, as the supernatural elements of Lethem's writing seem to be a background factor. I've never been to Brooklyn, but I now feel as if I would recognize it's 1970's atmosphere. Young friends, one white one black, get along grandly yet still must suffer the pains of their own racial issues. Lethem can get quite ethereal in his musings, the kind of free prose that makes you think you turned too many pages at once and missed something. Great kid perspective, my favorite line being, "Sixth grade was fifth grade with something wrong."
