Synopsis
In 1945, Claire Randall is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon in Scotland. Innocently she walks through a stone circle in the Highlands, and finds herself in a violent skirmish taking place in 1743. Suddenly she is a Sassenach, an outlander, in a country torn by war and by clan feuds. A wartime nurse, Claire can deal with the bloody wounds that face her. But it is harder to deal with the knowledge that she is in Jacobite Scotland and the carnage of Culloden is looming. Marooned amid the passion and violence, the superstition, the shifting allegiances and the fervent loyalties, Claire is in danger from Jacobites and Redcoats - and from the shock of her own desire for James Fraser, a gallant and courageous young Scots warrior. Jamie shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire, and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

I picked this up in a charity shop shortly after joining book crossing cos I liked the title...I haven't had a chance to read it yet so I'm offering as a UK only ring..It's a biggy, 863 pages so don't stress about how long it takes, but try and move it as soon as you can for other participants.

So far it's going to

Cats-eye
AnglersRest
Teachie

Back to me

I received this today in the post - it's a biggie (poor postie!). I will get to it as soon as possible - I have a couple smaller things to finish up first, then I'll dive in.
Thanks for offering this as a ring, Sunlightbub!!

Wow. I finished this in record time, considering the size of it...and I am hooked! What a fabulous story. Part historical fiction, part almost-sci-fi, and part romance...that alone should have put me off, as I'm not a fan of any of those genres BUT I loved the characters and the historical details - once I got into it, I didn't want it to end. The thing I liked best about Gabaldon's writing style is the dry sense of humour she has given to Claire, and her beautifully detailed descriptions of Jacobian Scottish Highland life. The only thing I think that lets this entire series down is the vaguely Mills and Boon-ish artwork on the front!
In this case, it's true - you can't judge a book by its cover!
Thank you so much for sharing this one sunlightbub...I'm off to track down book #2!
I will PM AnglersRest for an address so I can post it on.

This arrived while I was poorly, even though I already have several rings here I was intrigued by the all the positive comments about the book on the BCUK list and here it was!

Well, it was 864 wonderful pages. I was so sad as I neared the end of the book and I am delighted that I am in a spiral for the rest of the series. It was such an amazing book, as the central character is brought to life, as she lives her double life, first in 1945 then in 1743. A cross between historical, romance & fantasy its a beautiful read, and will appear as one of my top reads for the year.

Just PM'ing Teachie for an address to send this great book on to.

What a brilliant read! It took me just 2 days to read it. I was up til 3 am this morning finishing it, with lots of tears towards the end.I had not heard of this author before and I am so grateful to BookCrossing for introducing me to so many wonderful books.
Thanks Sunlighbub for sending this book out on a ring. You must read it when it gets back to you, I am sure you will also get hooked into the series.
I am in a spiral for these books, but am off to trawl the charity shops to see if I can find the next one.
