i've just inherited a box of books from my brother - what a lovely start to the new year!! there's lots of stuff i'm unfamiliar with, and lots of stuff that sounds really cool, so it looks like i've got lots of literary adventures ahead of me!!

here's what the back cover blurb has to say about this book:

"patrick bateman is twenty-six and works on wall street; he is handsome, sophisticated, charming and intelligent. he is also a psychopath. american psycho is a bleak, bitter, black comedy about a world we all recognize but do not wish to face and it takes us to a head-on collision with america's great dream - and its worst nightmare."

initially i picked this book up out of curiosity - it's the first time i've ever come across an "r" rated book before (the books i read don't come with stickers on the front proclaiming them "not available to persons under 18 years... restricted"). most of the back cover was taken up by snippets of reviews; one line stated that what i held in my hands was an "important" novel, and i wondered what on earth that could mean.

i gave this book up after about 150 pages - i was bored with the brand/product/name-dropping after about 50 pages, but talked myself into continuing. i understand that it's simply another way of announcing how much things cost; the assumption being (of course) that dearer is better. but considering that i didn't recognise most of the brands or labels mentioned, i had a sneaky suspicion that i wasn't going to "get" the subtext these things implied. either that, or i just wasn't bright enough to realise why this book was so clever.

something i found hard to believe was how much the narrator knew about women's clothing - enough that with a single glance (in one instance in a nightclub... a place i thought was dimly lit??) he was able to identify the designer of each item, including jewellery and shoes. most of the guys i've met call anything that isn't obviously pants a "dress", so whenever he notices what a woman's wearing, i can't help thinking "yeah, right!"

i'm wondering what to do with this book now - i think it'd be irresponsible of me to add it to the local obcz bookcase, 'cause who knows who might pick it up, be traumatised by the subject matter, and blame bookcrossing for the actions of a member? i'm going to wander over to cliff's wishlist site and see if anyone in australia's wishing for it...

Finally back into the world today. I kept it just long enough so that I've read enough of it to say that I have . . . well, sort of read it -- as much as I wanted to, anyway. That's another of the 1001 books down. Still quite a long way to go.

Arrived in the post yesterday. I thought my pile of bookring TBRs was shrinking (I finished a book yesterday), but then this got here, too **laughs** I watched the movie and found it confusing but throught provoking, and I generally find books to be better and to explain more. Ergo, I'm really looking forward to this book, but it will be a while before I get to it. Please be patient with me. Thank you so much for sharing!

7 out of 10

So many lists! Such a strange submersion into an alien psyche. At times, I had difficulty remembering things. I wondered, sometimes, if he wasn't describing himself as wearing different clothes on the same day, and I couldn't figure out if he'd changed, or if it was meant to be an indication of his insanity. I am glad to have gotten the chance to read this, for sure!

It's in the post as of today to Suedo.

I'm glad I'm last on the list as my ring books are piling up at the moment. Will get to this as soon as the other ring books are read.

Made a start on this and I too did not get a lot of the names in the first pages. I also do not enjoy reading about the 'IN' crowd and their obsession with wealth.
I tried it and may go back to it once I've read or tried all the other books on the list but I am not goign to give my time to something that doesn't work for me, when I have so many other books waiting.
