Middleton describes Soviet era Mongolia at the end of 1980s with an intelligent eye and a keen wit.
I bought this before a trip to Mongolia in 2001. I'm pleased to say that many things had moved on a lot from the situation described in the book.
Re-reading it has brought back memories, though perhaps the one of drinking airag (a mildly alcoholic yoghurt-style drink made from fermented horse milk) and the aftereffects of same should have remained buried...
