From the back cover:

Caney Paxton wanted his cafe to have the biggest and brightest sign in Eastern Oklahoma - the "opening soon" part was supposed to be just a removable, painted notice. But a fateful misunderstanding gave Vietnam vet Caney the flashiest joke in the entire state.

Twelve years later, the once-busy highway is dead, the joke is old, and the sign is as worn as Caney, who hasn't ventured outside the diner since it opened. The regulars at the Honk, still gabbing and crabbing over hot java and eggs easy, haven't changed much either. Then one blustery December day, a thirtyish Crow woman blows in with a half-dead three-legged dog in her arms and a long-buried secret on her mind. Hiring on as a carhop, Vena Takes Horse is soon shaking up business, the locals, and Caney's heart ... as she teaches them all about generosity of spirit, love, and the possibility of promise - just like the sign says.

I really enjoyed this book - even more than Where the Heart Is. Billie Letts has a way of making her characters come alive. I got so caught up in their lives that I was sorry the book ended. My favorite characters were Bui and Molly O. I guess now I'll have to read Shoot the Moon.

I'm so, so sorry! I just noticed I hadn't done this JE when I received the book!!!... I guess I must have received sometime around the 20th March...
I don't usually forget to journal the books when they arrive, but... I don't know, just totally forgot about it.

Anyway, I'll be able to get it going out soon but now I'm wondering: to whom will I do it? Where do you keep the bookray list, raralovestoread?

And it will follow shortly (tomorow or the day after, the latest) to katiesmama, once Sobergirl had already signed up for another bookring for this book and had forgotten about it.

I finnished it some days ago, and I was glad I had the time to go through it slowly (it isn't such an easy english as the latest books I've been reading and it kinds of slows down the reading process) for I enjoyed it a lot!
Mostly, I guess, because we get the sense we're reading about real people in a real place...

Thanks a lot for the opportunity to get to read this book, raralovestoread!
Hope the rest of you will enjoy it as well!

I'm almost in shock, but here it goes:
After posting the book, the 27th of April and not hearing from it since then, I've got it back yesterday, the 1st of June (!!), returned by the portuguese post offices, for allegedly not having sufficient postage!!
But it did have!!
And even if it didn't... more than one month to return it when it didn't even leave Lisbon?!!!
I'm going to write a big complaint, over this one, oh yes I will!!

Anyway, I'll only be able to do so next week and I'll come back here then to JE the "resending" of the book.
I'm so sorry for all this, it's been a quite delayed bookray!!

And it was finally resent last friday, the 16th June.
I must warn you, though, that it'll take some time, once I had to pay the postage again, so I decided to send it by surface mail. Sorry about that!

Just hope it will have better luck with the following journeys!

Wow! Safe and sound!!... Back on the tracks, then; finally. Couldn't be happier! And it didn't take all that long as well.
Just can hope it'll keep that way now.
Have fun!!
