Picked up at the BC Meet-up. Curious to see how it compares to the movie.

I had the same trouble as with the movie, events are too fragmented and piecemeal that I couldn't get the feel of the love between the two characters.
I would have loved to have seen this in a longer version to do it more justice.

Received the book today, sat down for a little read when I opened it and, what do you know, finished it already!

I was quite impressed with this and found it better than the film because it was so quick. Proulx has a way of conveying a lot of feeling with very few words. I like that style, some stories are so tragic that you don't need that fact pointed out to you. Given the bare facts and words you can fill in the feelings yourself, making it all very poignant. I found that very effective in this story.

Thanks for sharing MeGeerts, I'll be PMing WelshHelen directly.

Received safe and sound today. I have a couple of books to read before this one, but, seeing as this is so short, I may just sneak it in early :-) I saw the film last week so I'm really looking forward to reading the book.

A short but intense read. I think it made me appreciate the film more but having seen the film also helped to "get into" the characters. I think if I hadn't seen the film I'd have found it quite an unsympathetic read. Highly recommended.

Posted to laurarn today.

I haven't seen the movie, but it can't be better then this book. This short story is well written and powerful. The intimacy between these men and their struggle to live with some sort of integrity while tring to actually experience life, not just survive it,is amazing. I read it in 2 hours. I found reading it so interesting. The story shows an intimacy between men that is seldom explored in literature. It isn't sterotypical or harloquin but is written in the style of realism. It is written by a woman, but during reading the reader forgets that. Thanks for sharing it! I m PMing the Breeze144 and will mail as soon as I get a reply.

It was very fast and riveting. I hadn't planned to see the movie - not a subject that interested me but now might, looking for more insight I think. More description. I didn't really feel the 'love' all refer too. Lust instead. Once the boundaries were crossed they really only had each other. Do rate it very highly as a book.
Whisperwind wants to be skipped so have emailed dittybopper. Mailed the book on 2-28.

I found the writing to be very good. I enjoy a straightforward writing style although I feel that a few more details on certain subjects in this story would have clarified things somewhat better for me. I have not seen the movie, nor had I planned to see it but I think that when it comes out on DVD, I may rent it. Thanks for sharing this book with me MeGeerts. I will contact the next person on the list and move it out on my next bi-weekly mail run.

I quite enjoyed the book. I have seen the movie and thought it was pretty boring. Beautiful music and beautiful secnery but the story in itself was pretty boring.
I liked the book a lot more!

Reserved for em64. Will send to her asap!

I have a bit mixed feelings about the book. It was well-written but somehow it didn't quite reach the powerful feelings the two men were experiencing. But maybe that was the intention; two rough cowboys feeling feelings they weren't supposed to feel but couldn't help feeling might not have so many words to express themselves with words. I haven't seen the film - yet. It would be interesting to see if it brings anything new to the book.

I already have aneca's address so I'll be mailing it to her next wee,

I just finished it and it was more of a short story than an novel I think. I thought it was an interesting and intense read but I wish we could have had a better insight of Ennis and Jack's thoughts and motifs. Someone else mentioned finding a bit too fragmented and I got the same feeling.
Thank you so much for sharing this, I'll mail it to Zenita later this week.

This book has not been rated.

Received this on saturday - and read it on sunday.
I had heard it was a short book - but didn't realise how short!! I haven't seen the film so didn't really know the story. The book is so small though there isn't time to get into the characters or anything - I imagine this time the film would help.

Thank you for sharing - looks like it's back to MeGeerts when I get their address.

I received this yesterday from MeGeerts! Thanks so much for your RABCK!

We were having a huge thunder storm, so I decided to read a little before I journaled its arrival. I ended up finishing the story before the storm ended. I think I expected more of a love story, but I guess that's the point. If the world was a more understanding place, these two men would have probably spent their lives together, as committed as any couple. I was mostly amazed at Annie Proulx's ability to portray the feeling of the place and the language. She did the same thing so well in "The Shipping News" that I just assumed that Newfoundland was the place she knew best.
