From back cover:
The compelling story of two outsiders striving to find their place in an unforgiving world.

Drifters in search of work, George and his simple-minded friend Lennie, have nothing in the world except each other and a dream - a dream that one day they will have some land of their own. Eventually they find work on a ranch in California's Salinas Valley, but their hopes are doomed as Lennie, struggling against extreme cruelty, misunderstanding and feelings of jealousy, becomes a victim of his own strength. Tacking universal themes; friendship and a shared vision, and giving voice to America's lonely and dispossessed, Of Mice and Men has proved one of Steinbeck's most popular works, achieving success as a novel, a Broadway play and three acclaimed films.

I interrupted a conversation last week among some colleagues who were discussing this book, as I hadn’t read it I made them defer the conversation until I could read it. Lucky it’s a small book, I was able to rush through it over the Easter weekend.

This is a beautifully drawn character study, a story a friendship and dreams, of those living the hard life. I knew something terrible was going to happen but I’m not sure I really understand why it ended the way it did. I suppose George had little choice.

I guess this is one of those ‘must read’ books and I’m glad I had the chance to discover this great American author.

Thanks for sharing leeny37 – I’ll re-release this soon.

Removed from the Purist's Bookbag. Thanks kirst040.
It's one of those books that I've grown up knowing I should read, and never actually got there yet.

A very powerful book, and I'm glad that I finally have now read it. The writing is very simple and just states "what is", but even so it becomes a very involving tale of loneliness and friendship, and of hope and loss, as well as making strong statements about discrimination. The fact that it was rather predictable made no difference due to the mastery of the writing.

Have promised it to cobalt-tree in the "International Reverse Wishlist Relsay" relay (and no, that is not a misprint), and will post it very soon.

just arrived in the mail today, with my thanks going to crimson-tide.
There was a surprise inspirational bookmark inside! Which is wonderful because I don't own a single bookmark! I usually use scraps of paper or playing cards. So I'll be treasuring it :)

I'll read the book in a short while (I've got some others to finish off first), then think about how I'll pass it off.

Great book, I really liked it. I certainly want to look into reading more Steinbeck now.

I lent this book to a friend yesterday for her to read while she goes to a cottage.
