Loved this! very readable, an excelent and faithful account of British life, with characters from a variety of backgrounds. The second part of the novel set in Jamaica is a fascinating and imformative account of another culture, and the personalities and humor that come through make for a very enjoyable read. I was fascinated by the family trees, it was quite an eye opener to see how close the present generation was to the geneation born into slavery.

Thanks so much Gill - I really enjoyed this and couldn't put it down.

I enjoyed this novel a great deal, once I gave it a chance - it took me several pages to get used to the single quotes and the rhythm of the language, but once acclimated I sank right into the story. Faith's journey to learn about her roots was a fascinating, funny, and ultimately rather profound one and I'm glad I was along for the ride. I have to say that as a white American with no knowledge of British society, I was really able to understand what Levy was saying about being a black woman in today's England. I loved the subtlety of her writing: she never hits you over the head with anything, she simply assumes that you are paying attention. I'm now on a quest to read her other books: I sure hope they are available here in the U.S.

Thanks SO much for sharing this, Heaven-Ali! I'm thrilled to have found such a wonderful author, whom I probably would not have discovered without this bookring.

I loved this book. Andrea Levy has a wonderful gift for giving the reader the most information about her characters with the least effort. As one journaler already said - she doesn''t hit you over the head but reveals her story through character and place. I thought this sensitive and undidactic approach says more about the Jamaican experience than any text book. Who could not love the Campbell/Jackson family and their family history after reading this. Shall release it to the bookshelf at Leverton''s.
