Journal Entry 1 by wingkinediwing from Rushyford, County Durham United Kingdom on Tuesday, December 13, 2005
Alexander McCall Smith, Ian Rankin and Irvine Welsh offer radically different takes on Edinburgh life : a homesick biologist from Delhi comes to a startling conclusion; two Homeless World Cup players become entangled in a magical world of illusion; and a tiger related mayhem breaks out in Murrayfield.
JK Rowling introduces these intriguing perspectives with a thoughtful account of her move to Edinburgh and her life there.

All proceeds from the book will go to the ONE CITY TRUST which campaigns for social justice in Edinburgh.

Journal Entry 6 by smurphie from Banchory, Scotland United Kingdom on Tuesday, January 3, 2006
Brilliant little book. Liked Alexander McCall Smith. Loved Ian Rankin but then I knew I would and was a bit disturbed by Irvine Welsh. Noticed a recurring theme through these stories wonder if anybody else can.

Setting off tommorrow on it's next part of it's travels. Just hope the post office is finally open!

Nabbed the bookmark. Sorry but I have replaced it.

Journal Entry 9 by molekilby from Brithdir, Wales United Kingdom on Monday, January 9, 2006
A very short book. I think I enjoyed the Alexander McCall Smith story best, but I may just be biased towards recent reading.

Posting to vibrant-art this week.

Journal Entry 10 by vibrant-art on Thursday, January 26, 2006
Received this a few days ago and am already finished reading and ready to send this on...I also enjoyed the McCall Smith. I found the intro. by JK Rowling interesting and the ending to the Ian Rankin story a little ambiguous/confusing....

I wouldn't say this gives a really well-rounded view of Edinburgh life, but at least each of the stories is set there, and it's been put together for a good cause! I will contact the next person on the list and send this on its way soon.....
Thanks for including me in this bookring!

Journal Entry 11 by vibrant-art on Monday, February 6, 2006
This will be in the mail to Lorelei03 in the next few days....

Journal Entry 12 by Lorelei03 from Queens, New York USA on Monday, February 27, 2006
Sorry for not journalling sooner - I recved this one (two?) week(s) ago and have just started today - expect to finish this week (I have a really long commute!) and mail out over the weekend.

3/2 update. I have finished this book quickly (sorry to ldpaulson who I know has a high tbr pile!) and thought it was a good read. Very interesting to see these view sof a city I never visited but always had a very art-y image of. This portrayed quite a different city.

Journal Entry 13 by ldpaulson from Ventura, California USA on Saturday, March 18, 2006
As soon as this book was retrieved from the confines of its envelope, I decided to read it while having breakfast. On that impulse, I finished these three stories rather quickly.

Although Irvine Welsh's story was imaginative and ideally about how we know nothing of the world immediately around us, it was exceedingly odd. I did enjoy the others quite a bit more. I should like to read some more of Ian Rankin.

Thanks for the book ring!

Journal Entry 14 by affinity4books from Bryan, Texas USA on Tuesday, April 11, 2006
One City arrived safely in Texas yesterday. I received two bookrings yesterday, but I'm sure I can finish this one quickly and send it on its journey... I've read the intro and the One City cause seems like a wonderful idea. I'm glad they're getting publicity, maybe they will inspire other cities to do similar projects.

Journal Entry 15 by affinity4books from Bryan, Texas USA on Tuesday, May 9, 2006
Ack, I thought I had journalled this a few weeks ago when I read it... Apparently not! Sorry about that. I enjoyed each of the stories and the intro as well. I'm a McCall Smith and Rowling fan already, so I loved hearing more from them. The story about magic was intriguingly mysterious and left me wanting more. The last story was entertaining but I didn't get into it as much as the others. I have never been to Scotland so it was interesting to get glimpses of life there from some very different viewpoints. Thanks for sharing this one. I have The BowieFollies address and should be sending it on this week.

Thank you pammykn for sending me this book and also the other books for the OBCZ! I will hopefully get to release them there next week!

Thank you kinedi for letting me take part in this ring! I was in Edinburgh in May and was really tempted to buy this book but I resisted and now I can finally read it!!

I will read this sometime during this week and I will pass the book on to Allbookedup next Friday at the Ladies Bookcrossing night here in Vienna!

Journal Entry 24 by Amberkatze from Wien Bezirk 10 - Favoriten, Wien Austria on Sunday, August 13, 2006
This was a nice quick read. I enjoyed the stories that were set in a city that I now know well and it is so nice to know most of the places that are mentioned when reading books written by Scottish authors.

The Alexandra McCall Smith story was quite good and I really liked the ending. The Ian Rankin story was a bit of a let down for me but it was still good in it's own way. The mention of Scotland playing Austria put a smile on my face.

My favourite story was the one by Irvine Welsh. I haven't ever read a book by him (tried one and didn't like it) but this story was highly amusing and I found myself laughing out loud while reading the telephone conversation to the zoo! Very good and very Scottish!

I will hopefully see Allbookedup on Friday and can pass the book on to her! Thanks again for letting me take part in this ring!

Passed on to BLu177

Journal Entry 30 by BLu177 from Frankfurt am Main, Hessen Germany on Wednesday, February 7, 2007
Yep, the book is with me now and I already have started reading, in the mornings on my way to work and back of course....

Journal Entry 31 by BLu177 from Frankfurt am Main, Hessen Germany on Tuesday, February 13, 2007
So, I finish the book this morning in the tram on my way to work and to be honest, I am not quite sure about the different stories, if I like them or not.
I think I liked Alexander McCall Smith's story best and would like to know how it would develop, I am absolutely not sure about Ian Rankin's story and was immensly confused with the people's reaction regarding that tiger in Irvine Welsh's story. I mean, I would die on the spot seeing a tiger in my back garden or just down the street.. and those figures in the story were just so relaxed and far away from any kind of panic, unbelievable...

Anyway, it will be release at todays meetup in Frankfurt and will see where it will travel next.

Cheers

Couldn't resist because of kind (and old) memories of Edinbraa.
28.06.07: Nice stories, all about tigers.

Will travel to elham.

Journal Entry 33 by elhamisabel from Frankfurt am Main, Hessen Germany on Monday, July 16, 2007
This is certainly one well travelled book!
I got it at the meetup in Mainz today, thanks a lot, d-vineland!

Journal Entry 34 by elhamisabel from Frankfurt am Main, Hessen Germany on Friday, July 27, 2007
The three authors had each a different kind of short story but they all had a tiger in them.
It was interesting to see how each author included this common denominator. While Alexander McCall Smith just used the tiger as an afterthought which was, nevertheless, in a way essential to the developement to the outcome of the story, the other two authors used the tiger (or,in Ian Rankin's case, the person called Tiger) as the main item of their stories.

I liked the writing style of Alexander McCall Smith, although I wasn't particularly interested in the story itself.
Ian Rankin's story I didn't like at all. Neither the style nor the story were such as to grab my attention. I caught myself several times trying to just skim read parts of it. It júst wasn't intersting to me.
Irvine Welsh's story was good, though. I liked both the style and the content of it.

I have never read anything else by these three authors. In a way it was a good introduction though I must admit that I don't like short stories very much. In my experience, though, those who write good short stories have not a good hand in novel writing and vice versa.
I guess I should try to read at least one of their novels to have a proper opinion on this. ;-)

I received this today from Elhamisabel.

The entries have already whetted my appetite, so I''d better get reading...

A great collection of stories from 3 celebrated authors..

I am not sure why, but I kind of expected the writing to be similar, but I'm glad they weren't. I can see parralells between these stories and previous things each of them has written. I particularly enjoyed the story by Irvine Welsh, but then I'm a sucker for poetic justice and hapy endings!

I will now post on to IoJima.

Journal Entry 38 by Iojima from Nyons, Rhône-Alpes France on Saturday, August 25, 2007
Received very quickly, thank you. I have a friend from Edinburgh who is line for this one when I've read it.

Journal Entry 39 by Iojima from Nyons, Rhône-Alpes France on Saturday, September 1, 2007
Although of the three, I only like Smith's novels, I enjoyed all three stories. And the introduction by Rowling. I also like the whole idea behind the project. Thanks Gingergeoff! Now here goes the closest I get to wild releasing -- a RABCK to a denizen of Edinburgh -- and France.

Journal Entry 40 by HarimadSol on Monday, November 26, 2007
I found the stories quirky. I am not crazy about short stories so that affected my assessment. A friend gave it to me while I was in France, and I will pass it on to a friend in Malta.

Are you sure you want to delete this item? It cannot be undone.
