Great book! I was on a ray for this one and just couldn't wait - I bought a copy at a remainder store before I could get the ray. The true story of how one man started a cult...by accident. On a lark, journalist Danny Wallace placed an ad in a small London paper that offered two simple words: "JOIN ME". What followed was astounding. From all over the world, thousands of replies poured in, effectively "joining" Danny - but in what, he had no idea. When "Joinees" began referring to him as "The Leader", Danny quickly understood one thing - he had just created a cult. Join me quickly became a global phenomenon. With the help of a few trsuted Joinees and the President of the Galatic Government, Danny promulgates his uncle's dreams of a Utopian soicety, struggles to keep his girlfriend, manages to stay humble admidst the newfound celebrity, and provides a remarkable sense of purpose and belonging to Joinees everywhere. Equal parts hope and hilarity, Join Me! is an inspriing and utterly original account of one man's ambititous (if unplanned) mission to bring people together and make the world a better place.

What a funny, optimistic story! I really enjoyed this one. I admire Danny Wallace's willingness to take on such a seemingly ridiculous project and make something good come of it. I may have to send him my photo! (Although I must be the only one around who doesn't keep on hand passport-sized photos of myself...) I did wonder how he was supporting himself during all this Join Me stuff. I was amazed at how often he hopped on a plane and dashed off to another country to find joinees... I laughed out loud many times while reading this book. I loved Gareth, the Joinee cleric, and lots of the other eccentric characters. I found it hilarious when Danny was on the plane and thought the lady was staring at him, and his suave response to her son. Anyway, this is a wonderful, happy book that helps restore one's faith in the people of the world. Thank you, Lorelei03, for sharing this gem! (I'm off to PM Mysteryfan03 now to get this moving again.) Update: Mailed out via media rate on 5-16-06.

I really enjoyed this book. I also wondered how he supported himself and could see why his girlfriend was afraid to trust him as a life partner. On the other hand, they really weren't that close if he could not confide such a simple thing and she could not listen to him. He says that he wrote reviews, but he either got paid a lot or had money in the bank! (rich parents perhaps? he was pretty irresponsible) Things just happened to work out for him. Although, he started it for fun and with no real purpose, it ended up well and the idea is great. If you go to the website, you can see how many people in your area belong! http://www.join-me.co.uk/ Just click on the Join Me Directory. You dont have to join. Thanks so much for sharing this with us, Lorelei03!! (are we related? lol) I will send this on soon :+)

Finally finished this last night! I liked reading about Danny's 'stupid boy-projects' and I have to admit that I did laugh out loud a couple times. This book really made me wonder who I might know that has 'joined' and if anyone has 'joined' after reading this book. I checked out the website and thought about it....but haven't done anything yet! I'll send this to Janey-canuck tomorrow! Thanks for sharing! Aug 29 - sent today! Canada Post tracking #0075159000396607

I wonder if BC is a collective, not a cult... This was a fun little book - I zipped through it in about two days cause I was just so intrigued by the story. I'm amazed at what Join Me has turned into, but can't say that I'd have heard about it if it wasn't for this bookring. Danny seems like quite the character (so do his friends - does anyone know if his former flatmate Dave is Dave Gorman of Dave Gorman's Googlewhack Adventure as that book refers to Dave Gorman rushing around the world to meet more Dave Gormans). I don't think I'll be joining, but I'll probably keep my eye on the website every now and then to see how things are going. I pm-ed MidlandsGoat for an address a few days ago (before I even started the book, to be honest) and I don't have one yet, so this book will remain with me for a few days more. I'll update this journal entry when I get the book in the mail. Thanks for sharing! ETA: got in the mail on 9-13-06

A very funny and enjoyable book. I never realised Danny Wallace & Dave Gorman were best of mates but it refelcts in their work and writing. A true story of a man, a plan, and a promise that might just come off, if only Danny could get peoples attention...

I *loved* this book! The style was friendly and quirky, very easy to read and full of laugh out loud moments. I did wonder, though, why Danny just didn't tell his girlfriend at the beginning - lying is never good for a relationship! I loved the Bible-like chapter headings - 1. It came to pass that the words of Daniel were heard by a second Daniel, son of Ander. 2. And Daniel - nay, but the other one - was mending a chariot brought out from the land of the Ikeans. ROFL! I have Jaycee1972's address and will post asap. Thank you so much for sharing, Lorelei03, and sorry that I hung on to it for a bit longer than I should have :-)

Great read, thanks for sharing. I was a bit suprised that Danny did not tell his girlfriend about his 'project' for so long. If a boyfriend of mine was flying here there and everywhere and lying about it, I think I would have been pretty unimpressed too! Very enjoyable and a great idea! Pming Kbudgie for their address.
