I read this book during my 2005 Christmas break and found it quite fascinating. You soon know that something has happened to Natalie, you soon find out more or less what happened to her, but only slowly you learn how it all came to be. Good pageturner ;-)

The story circles around a Protestant sect whose followers reject all imagery, as an extreme interpretation of the second commandment (You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I The Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate Me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love Me and keep My Commandments.). This covers a lot, e.g. passport photos, which means travelling abroad is affected, etc. The imageless perspective is interesting and appealed to me at some level. We are affected too much by imagery nowadays, less wouldn't hurt. However, the believers in Page's novel take this many steps too far.
Highly readable, only the epilogue was a bit disappointing, a bit too happy, it didn't seem to fit. An open ending would've been fine with me.

After finishing this book, I read Tulip Fever by Deborah Moggach. Interesting contrast: the characters in her book worship paintings and thus imagery.

I'm not really sure what to make of this book. I finished it this morning, and although it was a bit slow in the beginning it did pick up the pace after about 40 pages or so. I found the flashback bits most interesting - Natalie as an adult seemed a bit of a flat character to me. I expected a bit more of a surprise re: what actually happened - I think I felt let down by the final revealation. I agree with maupi that an open ending would have fit better, too.

Thank you for sharing this wishlist book with me, maupi! This will be in the post to Helly77 shortly as part of a swap :-) Enjoy!
