I added The Good Women of China to my Wishlist after reading 'Sky Burial' by the same author. Sky Burial was one of my favourite reads of last year so I had high hopes for this book. While I found it interesting, and the stories of some of the women that Xinran interviewed were truly horific, this book just didn't have the same magic as Sky Burial. Perhaps a lot of meaning got lost in translation? The Good Women of China was a good insight 'behind the scenes' in China where the well-manicured world that Westerners see, is a world apart from the realities of communist China. Being half-Chinese myself, it did offer me the chance to see how some of my family might have lived through the revolution.

A deeply moving set of stories of the awfull treatment of women in China. Having studied Mandarin in past, I was familiar with the sexism embedded in the Chinese language and characters. Previous reading had also brought some of the less appealing aspects of the cultural revolution into focus. Where this book had maximum effect, though, was in the number and range of stories that it told. They were certainly both deeply painful and deeply moving. That notwithstanding, the book itself came across somewhat contrived in places and I wasn't completely sure that the story was always completely truthful - the extremely serendipitous location of Jingyi in 'The Woman Who Waited Forty-Five Years stretched my credibility a lot. This may be because the story has been written to protect some people or it may be a cultural artifact - I felt the same thing about Geisha of Gion recently. Nevertheless I'm very pleased to have read this, so thanks to j4neyo for registering it and thanks again to MissyZ for RABCKing me with it.
