I am a big fan of Coelho. That book is one of the most beautiful love stories I have ever read. One of the few books where I cried at the end (even though I was in public). It is such a beautiful book (and not kitschy, that is the best).

The book arrived here today. Thanks eatsletters!
I have read most of the older Coelhos (haven't managed to start Onze Minutos) and mostly liked them. A big plus is that his Portuguese is rather easy to understand. The Zahir will be my first Coelho in English. Will try to read it over the Christmas days.
Who will be next in line?? (Must post it to the next reader before Dec 31 because of travel plans)

This arrived in the mail today. I'm looking forward to start reading it.
Well, I finished it finally. I took me a few tries, because I couldn't read more than maybe 20 pages at a time. It's not that I really didn't like it - but I can't honestly say that I did like it either. I found it just quite boring to read, which I found suprising, because usually I like Paulo Coelhos books.
I just hope in this one he wasn't really writing about himself, because the guy in the book is in my eyes an absolut egomanic idiot. He's not so much in love with his wife, who cleverly left him (and stupidly takes him back in the end), as with himself and all his talk about love sounded quite hollow to me. That's probably why I couldn't read it in one go.
Nevertheless I am thankful to eatsletters for the opportunity to read it!
As soon as I have kbudgies address, I will send it on.

I agree with samulli, overall a rather boring book about a selfish mans obesession with himself.
My first Coelho and my last.
Thanks for the opportunity to read this eatsletters.
i will post it to hunnyb early next week.

An interesting novel, made all the moreso because you're not sure whether it's semi-autobiographical or not. Regardless the message is very beautiful and inspiring - that love is what makes life worth living. The characters were rather strange and mysterious - I suppose that's done on purpose rather than Coelho failing to flesh them out properly. I think this book will stay with me for a while :)
Thanks eatsletters for the opportunity to read this, it's now continuing on its journey...

Received with the post, thanks for posting all the way back from Australia. Looking forward to reading another Coelho book.
Well, I must say I am not yet sure what to make of this book. I generally do like Paulo Coelho's book and I do go back to re-reading The Alchemist every so often becuase I often find there is more to hos books than first meets the eye. I am sure it's the same with The Zahir but so far I have not yet found it. Also like hunnyb I did wonder how much of it is autobiographical as the main character constantly mentions the book about the shepard going off to the desert (ie the Alchemist) However, I'll give it a few days to sink in and maybe then I have a better clue :o) Thanks for sharing this bookring and I'll post it out to the next person at the weekend.

Received safe and sound in the mail today - thanks Kinedi! I'm looking forward to reading this in spite of the slightly dubious reviews so far. I'm just finishing Geisha and then I'll crack on to this one!

I know previous reviewers have been a bit up and down about this book but I'm firmly on the side of the ups. I really loved it! This is my first Paulo Coelho and it won't be my last. Like just about everyone else, I wondered how autobiographical it was but where a lot of others loathed the egotism of the main character, I really enjoyed the flawed personality. After all, aren't most people fairly wrapped up in themselves? There were plenty of issues to mull over and I enjoyed it very much. It really kept me turning the pages and I wasn't even disappointed by the ending.
Thanks so much for sharing!
I'm just waiting for jwetter to respond to my pm so I can send the book on...

This book was mailed to me as part of a book ring. I absolutely loved it and I'm devastated that I have to send it on it's way. This is my 3rd Coelho read and so far I've not been dissappointed. I need more!!

Apologies, work, illness, domestic stress and travelling have conspired to prevent a timely journal entry for receipt of this book. I will try to read it as soon as possible. Coelho has not disappointed me so far, so I am looking forward to this.
First of all, a HUGE apology to eatsletters and hunnyb for stalling this ring for so long. My life turned upside down this summer, ultimately for the best, but it has meant Bookcrossing is having to take a back seat for a while.
I have loved everything I read by Coelho so far, but found this book a bit of a let down. I agree with some of the previous comments about the protagonist being too self-obsessed. I also found the language rather stilted, but this is perhaps due to the translation. Still a reasonable read, but not one of his best. PMing the next person in line right now.

Sent today to icekween01. I had to use surface mail, because the airmail cost was very high.
received safe and sound. I am currently in the middle of a book right now but I will start this one as soon as I finish. Probably won't get out until after the new year.

wow, I'm glad that's over. It was pretty excruciating for me. It was my sixth Coelho and probably my last.
Thanks for including me in the ring, I'm just waiting for the next person's address to send it along.

The book reached my mailbox today, thanks! I have a couple of rings to read before, though.
As brilliant as "The Alchemist" and "Veronika Decides to Die" are, I have always been disappointed by the others books I've read by Coehlo, which always feel like repeating the same "philosophy" over and over, and retell the same autobiographical story... And this one wasn't any different, I'm afraid. But thank you for sharing it via a bookring!
I finished this book last week, but my modem was dead, so I couldn't make a journal entry until now. I've just contacted eatsletters, who told me I could keep the book. So it's going to my AVL pile.

I'll be sending the book to tobysrus as a RABCK sometime over the next weeks.
A RABCK from aunt-sophie from my wish list! Many thanks! WOW, this is a well-traveled book! I plan to read and release. Thanks again aunt-sophie and to eatsletters for starting the original bookring.
