Journal Entry 1 by choclaholic from San Antonio, Texas USA on Tuesday, November 15, 2005
I had been hearing about this book for some time and even had it on my wish list... but for a long time, I had not been so excited about it that it was an immediate “must get” or anything. That was until about two months ago, when my book club meet, and one of the members picked a copy of this book up during the meeting. She became so engaged in it that she totally zoned out from the book discussion that was underway and read 3/4 of it on the spot! I was so intrigued by her reaction to it, that I went ahead and bought it right then. Coincidentally, our club's book for the following month was Pride and Prejudice, so having some Austen under my belt, I prepared to read this. This book got most of its stars from the fact the writing was very good, and the style was so very Austen-ish. But the story itself (in an Austen kind of way) lacked plot and action, and the characters were a bit two dimensional, neither were they particularly exciting or memorable. It took me a long time to read this book, and after some time, I found myself not terribly anxious to pick it up and continue reading. The story was about the members of a book club who only read and discussed Jane Austen's six books. It was fairly interesting how their lives mirrored the lives of the characters in Austen's books, (except, no dancing). Still, of course, it was a lot of rather ordinary, middle-aged middle-class hum drum. I'm sure this is a must read for any Austen-ite, but after this 2 month excursion into Austen, I feel I'm done with her. It was nice, all this "English-(almost)-gentry-getting-married" kind of a thing, but personally, I need a little more apocolyptic sci-fi to sustain my reading interest. So I will be releasing my copy of this, along with the other three Austens I have currently in my possesion: Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensiblity, and Mansfield Park. I hope someone who loves Austen, (whether they know it yet or not), picks up the whole set and is able to enrich their own life by it :) Or, just enjoy this book solo. Happy Reading!
