"I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day of January 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of l974. . . My birth certificate lists my name as Calliope Helen Stephanides. My most recent driver’s license...records my first name simply as Cal."
So begins the breathtaking story of Calliope Stephanides and three generations of the Greek-American Stephanides family who travel from a tiny village overlooking Mount Olympus in Asia Minor to Prohibition-era Detroit, witnessing its glory days as the Motor City, and the race riots of l967, before they move out to the tree-lined streets of suburban Grosse Pointe, Michigan. To understand why Calliope is not like other girls, she has to uncover a guilty family secret and the astonishing genetic history that turns Callie into Cal, one of the most audacious and wondrous narrators in contemporary fiction. Lyrical and thrilling, Middlesex is an exhilarating reinvention of the American epic.

I was very interested in reading this book, until I read these reviews on BookCrossing. Then I decided I won't bother. Some of the readers had liked the book though, so I hope it won't be a big disappointment to the next reader!
Gave to a boocrosser at the Helsinki meet-up.
I have been thinking that I'm going to read this book sometime. So I took it when it was right in front of me. Let's see if I'll like it or not.
Thank you for the book, CandyDarling!

I did not wait very much from the book, so it was not an disappoinment. I have not read Virgin suicides because I don't like the idea at all.
This book again has an interesting theme, but it is somewhat spoiled by the stereotypes. A part from that this is a family saga. The beginning was the best part of the family history. And the family history is more interestingly written than the development of the sexual identity of Callie or Cal. Evidently it was too difficult for the writer to get inside Calliope's skin.

The book is on its way to meet the next reader.
Happy reading!
