Mass-market paperback. ISBN 0441008534. I loved Dead to the World, so I look forward to this, the first in the Sookie Stackhouse series. Read more at charlaineharris.com.

From the back cover
Sookie Stackhouse is a cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn't get out much. Not because she's not pretty. She is. It's just that, well, Sookie has this sort of "disability." She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill. He's tall, dark, handsome -- and Sookie can't hear a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting for all her life.
But Bill has a disability of his own: he's a vampire with a bad reputation. He hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, all suspected of — big surprise — murder. And when one of Sookie's coworkers is killed, she fears she's next....

Just as much fun as Dead to the World, and I appreciated learning the characters' backstory. Bill was much more a man out of time in this book--I guess he adapts to the 21st century as the series goes on.
One small complaint -- this book is full of typos.
Mailed to Luintaurien in York, Nebraska.

This book with the wonderfully whimsical cover has finally found its way to my mailbox.

Thanks, Luintaurien, for the bookmark. And thanks especially to terra57 for sending this book out on a bookring.

This is a really fun book, especially if you're in the mood for a pretty good murder mystery with a misunderstood telepathic waitress, a leading-man vampire and his seriously creepy blood-thirsty friends, a shape-shifter and a serial killer.

(smile)

I was particularly intrigued by the premise that vampires have emerged as a new legal minority in today's society ... and that vampires can now survive on synthethic blood.

The uneasy courting dance and sexual tension between the two main characters ... the mind-reading cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse and a mainstreaming vampire named Bill ... is a wonderful thing to watch play out over the course of the book.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit ... and this series could easily become one of my guilty little pleasures.

Thanks again, terra57!

UPDATE: I mailed this book to kamalamalama in Hawaii this morning (Feb. 13) on my way to work.

Really enjoyed this book.... I'd already read "Living Dead in Dallas" & "Club Dead". so was great to get to read the first on e in the southern Vampire series...
Always love the mix of vampires, murder mysteries, romance & best of all lots of laffs!!!! Especially towards the end of this book when Sookie is in the hospital, her brother is in jail, her boyfriend is in New Orleans, her grandmother was dead & someone had murdered her cat!!!! Sounds like a country/western song to me !!!!!
Mahalo, Terry for letting me be in on the bookring...
So now its back on the sea turtle to the east coast...
