Red Sorghum

I need a 'Y' for my 2005 A-Z Challenge, so this is it.
This is an excellent though quite demanding book book. Lush, detailed, beautiful, tragic and, at times, graphically violent, it recounts four decades of life in rural China. Starting with the Japanese invasion of the country in 1937 it moves backwards and forwards in time showing a common thread that joins the war, battles between Chinese warlords and the narrator's family.
Coming across books like this is one of the great rewards of BookCrossing.
I will be sending this on as an RABCK to someone I think will appreciate it.

Chris, I'm touched!
Thanks very much for thinking of me! I've had a lousy couple of weeks at work, so your package really cheered me up. The book sounds fabulous - really looking forward to reading this one. I'm sure it will manage to bump its way up my growing TBR pile. ;-)
*hugs*

I'm very sorry to say that never managed to finish this book. I find violence very hard to stomach and although I can appreciate the brutality in Red Sorghum is probably quite true to the real conflict between the Chinese and Japanese at the time, I found I just couldn't stomach it. Regretfully I closed the book after 100 pages...

My understanding of the historic memory of the author comes from studies, extensive travel, and service in Southeast Asia from 1970 to 1995
I believe that the real import of the author's storytelling is contained in the second paragraph of page 376 (two pages before the end of the story).
"...have I no voice of my own?"
An indictment of Chinese Leadership, or politically correct speech, or both?
I enjoyed the journey through this author's eyes and their matter of factness.
