My husband received this mass paperback (Signet, 2005) from a friend in Bethesda, Maryland. I have permission to send it on to readers who want to read it as I "don't do mysteries".

From the back of the book:
"When Grace Lawson picks up a newly developed set of family photographs, there is a picture that doesn't belong-- a photo from at least twenty years ago with a man in it who looks strikingly like her husband, Jack. And though Jack denies her suspicions, he disappears that night, taking the photo with him.

In the days that follow, plagued by doubts about her marriage and herself, Grace begins to realize that others are looking for Jack and the photograph--including one fierce, silent killer who will stop at nothing. When the police won't help her, and neighbors and friends alike seem to have agendas of their own, she must confront the dark corners of her own tragic past to keep her children safe and learn the truth that might bring her husband home..."

The book begins with these lines:
"Scott Duncan sat across from the killer.

The windowless room of thundercloud gray was awkward and still, stuck in that lull when the music first starts and neither stranger is sure how to begin the dance. Scott tried a noncomittal nod. The killer, decked out in prison-issue orange, simply stared. Scott folded his hands and put them on the metal table. The killer--his file said he..."

I just mailed to SillySilhouette.

I enjoyed the book. I did find it a bit confusing at first, but found it to be a good mystery

Journal Entry 9 by SillySilhouette from Akron, Ohio USA on Tuesday, January 31, 2006

Thank you! So far, it seems like a "goodie"!

Journal Entry 10 by SillySilhouette from Akron, Ohio USA on Wednesday, February 15, 2006

This book was love at first sentence! It maintained my interest throughout. It was so well-written that I looked forward to reading it everyday after work.

Since it was confusing at first to the previous reader, sgscarcliff, I kept a written list of the characters. Otherwise, I might have lost track of who was who and become a bit confused myself.

Thanks bunches for sharing! I definitely want to read more by this author.

Mailed to firrantello on 2/16.

Arrived in the mail today. First thing I thought was "ooo, that's a fun BCID"
Does that make me strange? :)
Anyway, I'll get started on it right quick. Thanks!

Journal Entry 12 by firrantello on Thursday, February 23, 2006
I have to say, even after they explained the mystery, I still don't buy it. It just doesn't fit fight. I dunno. It was definitely a good quick read though.
I'll try to get it in the mail tomorrow!

I more or less enjoyed this one. Particularly the bad guy. How bad is he? "Poop-in-your-pants bad. If ten percent of the rumors about this guy are true, I'm sleeping with my Barney the Dinosaur night-light on." But I have to agree with firrantello in that the ending just didn't do it for me. I don't know that I was expecting "believable," but what happened was just a little too.....something.

Thanks for letting me in on this one. I'm PMing arcticgirl64 right now and hoping to get this moving again by weeks end.

Great book. Enjoyed it a lot, like I do with all books by Harlan Coben. Sorry it took me longer than planned to read it, but I`ve been sick twice in the month I`ve had he book and in between I`ve had so busy days that I`ve only read a couple of pages at night before i fell asleep. Anyway, it`s now on it`s way to spiderchic in UK. Enjoy.

This was another page turned by Harlan Coben. I could not put it down! There was almost to many twists and turns but it did keep me guessing until the end.

I hate it when a book has a few pages from another book right at the end. Like an introduction to the next book if you see what I mean. There I was thinking I had 3 or 4 pages to go and it was all over!

Pming Pinkagirl for address.

Thanks for sharing this book it was very enjoyable.

I am definately a Harlan Coben Fan, after this book and will endeavour to read more. This was my 2nd one.

The end seemed to go on a little bit, but the plot throughout was interesting, with many twists and turns in it!

Arrived in the mail today. Thanks.

I just finished the book I was reading and couldn't decide which one to pick up next. Well it looks as it has been decided for me. I have never read anything by Harlan Coben before, so I'm curious to find out what his books are like.

10th July update:

Finished reading today. I liked it until about half-way. Then I started to loose interest as I got confused by all the different names. Maybe I should have made a list like someone else suggested, but I never do a thing like that. It only got worse in the second part! The end, explaning it all, might have made up for that, but it didn't. I thought it was all too far fetched and unreal. I did not even finish the long epiloge. I just did not care anymore to know who was who or who did what. If all his books are like this, I don't think I will try one by Harlan Coben again. Maybe I'm more the British and Swedisch mystery & thrillers kind of reader. I liked the Grace Lawson character though.

This was a good page turner and I enjoyed it. It has a lot of twists and turns, and even if it surprised me with many of them, the last one was obvious for me since early on the book. I liked it, but I agree with some of the other readers, and I had to avoid analizing it too much because I feel that it didn't fit so well together.
SqueakyChu, thanks for the opportunity to read it and also to StoryChaser for sending it! Now it's ready to travel to the next reader.

This has to be one of the best suspense thrillers I have ever read. There were so many twists and turns in this one, I felt like I was on a roller coaster. The surprises kept coming right up until the very last page. The story begins when Grace Lawson picks up a newly developed set of family photos and discovers a picture that doesn’t belong. A picture taken about 20 years ago with a man in it who looks like her husband, Jack. Jack denies her suspicions but vanishes into the night taking the photo with him. Thus begins a journey for Grace who is trying to figure out who is really in the photo and where is her husband? I have never read a book by Harlan Coben before and I am so glad I joined this ring. I am going to put every book he has written on my wishlist.

Thank you SqueakyChu for including me in another fantastic ring.
I am Pm'ng the next person and will send on as soon as possible.

Another great thrill ride by Harlan Coben. He is a recent discovery for me and this is only my second one, but all of his are on my wishlist. This one read a bit like a Dan Brown novel in that he would advance each storyline a tiny bit before switching to another and somehow they all became connected at the end. Sometimes that type of book is somewhat annoying, but I was okay with it for this one. I liked Grace Lawson quite a bit and found it fascinating that she was able to get through her pain by likening it to childbirth. Interesting concept...too bad I had drugs...

I also found the ending a bit too pat. All this over a song? Seems like an awful lot just for that.

Anyway, thanks for sharing. I will pass it on as soon as I get an address.

This is the book with the highest journaler count on my Bookshelf... and still going!
My second Harlan Coben!
I really enjoyed this one; very, very interesting, with well depicted characters (my favourite one was not the main character, but Charlaine... "Think what the girl in the movie would do in such a situation... and do just the opposite!")
A mysterious photograph, many suspicious characters... Just a great thriller!

Journal Entry 62 by Sidney1 from München, Bayern Germany on Sunday, February 8, 2009
Book arrived safely yesterday. Have already started to read it - it's a real page-turner, and yes, it also reminds me of Dan Brown. Tell you more soon!

Journal Entry 63 by Sidney1 from München, Bayern Germany on Wednesday, March 11, 2009
Coben’s style is breathtaking. Chapters are short and invariably end with a cliff-hanger. The story moves on quickly with plenty of dialogue to give an immediate feel to the story. I usually find such a style somewhat formulaic, but Coben is a true master of suspense and pulls it off amazingly well. The story is somewhat convoluted as Coben tries to integrate as many twists as possible. There are a phenomenal amount of names and people to keep track of. Consequently, I am sure it is a book I will forget quickly, but it did keep me highly entertained during the few hours it took me to read it.
The one thing I will continue to worry about for the rest of my life is the fourth and fifth vertebrae in my back and their facet joints!
I have PatriciaLeao's address and will post this tomorrow.
