Journal Entry 1 by choclaholic from San Antonio, Texas USA on Friday, November 11, 2005
This is the 8th time I’ve listened to Tim Curry read to me the tales of the Baudelaire orphans (the other four I read myself) attempting to thwart the evil plots of Count Olaf and his cronnies. I must say I think it is as fresh as when I first heard The Bad Beginning a couple of years ago. Tim can read to me anytime :) In this edition, which is the next to the last book in the entire Series of Unfortunate Events (I said back at book 10 I thought there should be 13 unfortuante novels, and yes, there is), Sunny, Klaus and Violet encounter the darkest events yet. The three children go undercover in an effort to find out who is a villain and who is a Volunteer (for VFD that is). Dressed as concierges at the Hotel Denouement, they ponder the question over and over, “Are you who I think you are?” Yet, not only can they not even tell who is Frank and who is Earnest, there are more unfortunate events, that make them question if they themselves are noble. (Especially after Dewey is shot by the harpoon gun from the orphan’s own hands, and Sunny sets the hotel laundry room on fire.) Yes, it is as dark as a crow flying at midnight (or something like that). This series has remained creative and funny, even in its own unfortunate way. I loved how the hotel rooms were arranged according to the Dewey decimal system, and of course, Sunny’s one liners can be laugh out loud hysterical. Everything is really coming together now, as so many characters from the other novels are making an apperance, and because of such I say again that the books really ought to be experienced in order to get the full appreciation of what is going on. So if you have found this book and enjoyed it, I suggest you start at the beginning to familiarize yourself with the story. In fact, while I'm rather impatiently waiting for Book the 13th to come out (hopefully next year at this time), I think I will go back to refresh my memory on the details in the previous adventures myself.
