This should be a hoot - Terry Pratchett and kitties :) Got it as a special treat for myself...!

Journal Entry 2 by hunnyb from Sydney, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, November 13, 2005
This was a hoot indeed. Apparently, there are a breed of cats that are black with white feet - and they are inevitably called "Sooty". Tee hee. According to the criteria of the book, I doubt that my kitty is a "real" cat - but that's ok with me!! Sending this to leeny37 cos it was on her wishlist. Hope you enjoy it!!

Journal Entry 3 by leeny37 from Melbourne, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, November 15, 2005
A big THANK YOU to hunnyb for granting this wish, I've been looking for this book for quite a while now, so this is an absolute treat! It was also my birthday yesterday, so it does fit in nicely! Hee hee... I'm more of a dog lover myself, but I'm sure I will also find this a hoot. Thanks again, hunnyb! :) From Amazon.co.uk: Terry Pratchett took a side step away from Discworld in The Unadulterated Cat, a hilarious insight into the world of the feline. Amusingly illustrated by cartoonist Gray Jolliffe, Pratchett delivers a wonderfully funny collection of anecdotes that anyone, cat owner or not, will be hard pressed not to smile at. Not quite a replacement for a Discworld novel, but your sides will split just the same.

Journal Entry 4 by leeny37 from Melbourne, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, May 16, 2006
Well, I definitely got a few chuckles out of this book, but I didn't think it was riotously funny, which is usually my reaction when I read Terry Pratchett's books. I think it's because I'm really a dog person and I don't quite get cats! I did enjoy the anecdotes shared throughout the book though; like the one where the resident cat was stealing the newcomer's hunting spoils and parading them as his own! That is a classic. Thanks again, hunnyb, for sharing, I will be sure to pass this on to another bookcrosser!

Journal Entry 7 by midwinter from Tucson, Arizona USA on Monday, May 29, 2006

Read this in one sitting :) Interestingly, this is the first Pratchett I've read (aside from Good Omens). My cat definitely qualifies as "real"- a loudmouthed tortie who rules the roost - too bad the humour is lost on her ;) Passing this on to my bf who recently acquired two neighborhood strays...

Journal Entry 8 by Telerandil from Tucson, Arizona USA on Tuesday, July 18, 2006
Borrowed from midwinter. After reading this book, I can say with absolute certainty that I am owned by two real cats. Of course, getting to this point is half the fun. If you're familiar with Pratchett's prose, this will be an easy, quick read. There are a few oddities in the editing and formatting that give the book a bit of a slapdash, thrown-together feel; this might disturb readers who take the whole thing in one sitting. However, there are genuine nuggets of fun in here, and Pratchett's conversational tone lends itself to quotable turns of phrase, "rubber bag full of mercury" and "spitting ball of mildly-radioactive hatred" being a couple that I've adopted. The section on training and discipline for real cats is recommended reading, especially for those protecting gardens from random moggies. In summary: short, messy, but fun. Passing back to midwinter, for further disposition.

What a fantastic book! I laughed the entire way through, partially, I'm sure due to the fact that I seem to have a ''Real'' Cat of my own. I'll be mailing this off to Yvensong in the morning.

I look forward to more Games Cats Play, Offside being a favorite of every cat that's ever owned me! Thanks so much, midwinter, for sharing this funny, sometimes laugh-out-loud hilarious book with us. I am seeing Cherylllr next Sunday and will hand it to her then. 09/15 - I have handed this off to Cherylllr

Pratchett does have a different sense of humor - esp. compared to Americans. I liked learning new words like tilth, and new perspectives, like Shrodinger's box from the viewpoint of the cat. As the book is so short, I recommend re-reading it, the second time to see what Pratchett is saying about People. Off to Danville.

Glad this came in today's mail; I was looking for an entertaining book to relieve the weight of the "great literature" that makes up my other current rings/rays.

Journal Entry 17 by Megi53 from Danville, Virginia USA on Friday, October 06, 2006
Lots of fun! The big schnozzolas Gray drew on his cartoon cats made them unique (The Siamese were especially sly-looking). I was only disappointed in two chapters: "Schrodinger cats" (too intellectual) and "The cats we missed" -- I thought it would be speculations about African wildcats, but instead it was various dog species transmuted into cats! "Eeke" for a pet, anyone? It fits into mouseholes! Favorite sections: "Arch-villains' Cats" (page 40); "Cat chess" (page 85 -- I've actually seen neighborhood cats doing this!); and the simple truism on page 108: "Keeping pets for profit is never profitable." I finished the book two days ago, but haven't received an address for the next person yet. I've posted an "ISO" in the BC forum. This very entertaining little book will be safe with me until I get mailing instructions.

While still quite amusing, it was not quite as good as what I was expecting from Terry Pratchett. Still fun though. A nice, quick read. I am definitely owned by a real cat. :) This will go off to katintheboots today.

I found this on my doorstep tonight when I got home from work. Rings always seem to arrive in packs of three, and this is the third within about a week, but the two in front of it are short books, so I should get to this within a week or so.

I travelled by train this weekend, which gave me plenty of time to read some books, including this one. It was a the first Pratchett I've read and nice way to pass the time. It actually had me chuckling out loud here and there on the train, but I was busy enjoying the book, so if I got strange looks I didn't notice them. The only thing that bugged me was the fact that the book is riddled with spelling and punctuation errors. Other than that, a fun read. I'll PM BigKat for an address and get this in the mail.

Journal Entry 27 by BigKat from Bremerton, Washington USA on Monday, May 07, 2007
This one arrived in the mail today and I've already finished it. I adore Terry Pratchett and I love cats. I laughed out loud for most of the book as so much of it recalled memories of cats I've had (or is it more accurate to say cats that have had me?) over the years. I know for fact that Roguespierre, for example, could teleport through doors, Pratchett's theory of Schrodinger cats makes perfect sense to me. Meowzart is also a Schrodinger cat; we have no idea where he goes between the hours of 10:00 A.M and 4:00 P.M but for two years my parents thought he was fictitious as they only came to visit when he was vanished. It wasn't until I persuaded them to stay until 4:15 that they actually got to see him. This mind you is an indoor cat who will not go outdoors for any reason! He has to be in the house somewhere doesn't he? Apparently not! Meowzart is definitely real but Katzenjammer the other feline that owns us is more of what we call a decorator cat--dump him on the sofa and he'll sleep there all day looking decorative. And the chapter of cat games was absolutely brilliant. Offsides reminded me of my mother's late lamented BearCat who used to cry desperately at the back door of her house begging to be let in only to stroll through the house to the front door and scream that he had to go out RIGHT NOW IF YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOOD FOR YOU. My daughter is waiting anxiously to read it now and then we'll send it off to the next person.

Oh dear, this book has been with me much longer than intended - it got buried under a pile of 'worthy' reading for work & study... responsibilities, yechhh, who needs them?! Anyway, a very easy read, light & entertaining & cheerfully fluffy. Thanks to all for sharing & sending on! I have wubbaducky's address already so will get this moving again in the next week.
