I got this book as a RABCK from Lotusflower77 at the Oakville meetup today! It was on my wishlist because I saw it on the Top 1001 books you should read list and thought it sounded interesting. It was nice to meet you today, and thank you so much for bringing this for me!

Journal Entry 3 by HoserLauren from Toronto, Ontario Canada on Monday, July 31, 2006
This book is a tough one to review. It was funny, sad, happy, and depressing. Jonathan Safran Foer (the author uses himself as a character, which I find rather odd) takes a trip to the Ukraine in search of the woman that saved his grandfather from the Nazis. He's picked up by Alex, and Alex's grandfather who act as his translater and his driver. Let's also not forget Alex's grandfather's "seeing eye bitch" Sammy Davis Junior Junior, a dog, whom scares the crap out of Jonathan. The exchanges between Jonathan and Alex's broken english are at times laugh out loud funny. But as the story goes on, Alex's english gets better and the novel becomes less funny and more depressing. At the heart of it all, it really is a novel about survival during Nazi reign. There were some parts that just completely went over my head, and I didn't really understand parts of the ending. I ended up having to read a full synopsis of the movie (because I couldn't find one of the book) to figure out what I had missed. The style of the book was also quite interesting, with the letters and story going back and forth between Alex and Jonathan.

I did not like Foer's style ofwriting at all. I did think that Alex's broken English was quite funny. I must admit I did not 'get' this book at all. The last chapter is completely a bafflement
