A V. I. Warshawski story. This paperback is very world-weary.

Finished on Friday night. Good story, hair-raising, some niggles (like, why wouldn't police who know Vic personally not take her suspicions, and the sabotage of her car, seriously?). The second story I've read in the last few months set in & around Chicago, and in both of them the protagonist's long-dead mother is an Italian immigrant who used to sing opera professionally (the other book was Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveller's Wife).

On the way to Pinkozcat this afternoon, with The Walker. Thanks for your patience!

Received today - thank you very much xoddam; I enjoy Sara Paretsky's books very much.

As you mentioned - the book looks well used (but basically in good condition) so I'll take great care of it, read it and pass it on, hopefully, to someone else who will enjoy it and care for it.

A very enjoyable book; thank you xoddam.

The blurb:

"Ex-ice hockey champ Boom Boom was Vic's cousin. but now he's dead and Vic suspects that his fall over the side of a wharf was murder. Why else should her investigations at the Eudora Grain Company, where Boom Boom worked, spark off more killings.

Vic's enquiries take her on board the 'Lucella Wieser', a giant grain ship passing through the Soo locks, and there a spectacular, horrifying, almost leteral deadlock occurs ... "
