7 out of 10

Just the thing for a rainy winter night in front of the fireplace...bit long perhaps...but always something interesting.

Amazon Editorial Review:
Diane Ackerman's lusciously written grand tour of the realm of the senses includes conversations with an iceberg in Antarctica and a professional nose in New York, along with dissertations on kisses and tattoos, sadistic cuisine and the music played by the planet Earth. "Delightful . . . gives the reader the richest possible feeling of the worlds the senses take in."--The New York Times. (Literature--Classics & Contemporary)
This looks like a book I wouldn't normally read, so I am interested to see whether I will enjoy it. I have an open mind, so we'll see.

This was a very difficult book for me to read. And I must be honest and say that I haven't even finished it completely. For one thing I'm not used to reading non-fiction. I have found it very difficult to keep going in it or to even start in it. I need a story to pull it all together, because right now it has been lying on my cupboard for over a week and I haven't touched it.
That being said it isn't badly written at all, I liked the way she described the different senses and how she managed to conjure up images from childhood. (Or other times.) Many of the little facts are interesting and I have read a couple to my partner. But in the end that is what the book is to me. A collection of well told facts. And I've found it too factual to get into, if you catch my drift ... In my eyes this would be perfect for a fact-a-day-calendar, but not a book. Non-fiction books turn out to be not my cup of tea at all!

I participated in the springlottery, not because I lack books, alas : - ) , mount to be read is high enough, but I couldn’t resist to see what everybody would send me. It broadens ones horizon.
And it makes me stay away from the cheesy romances and the die-hard thrillers I love so much and think for once : - )
Thank you Moriquen. Interesting choice !

Thank you for the birthday card and this birthday book bloedengel. It certainly sounds interesting, so on to Mt TBR it goes. That mountain is pretty high at the moment, so don't be surprised if it takes me a while to get there, I will get there eventually :)

Hubby and I have dipped into this book, but not really read it cover to cover. It's a little too text bookish for me. There were a few interesting bits in it though and I agree with Moriquen, it would make a good "fact a day" calendar!
