Written in 1934 and set around 1914, Voyage in the Dark tells the story of eighteen year old Anna Morgan, who has recently moved to England from her childhood home on a small island in the West Indies (presumably Dominica, where Rhys herself was raised). Abandoned by her stepmother, Anna at first works as a chorus girl in London, where she battles constant chills and depression. She begins a relationship with Walter Jeffries, a middle-aged man whose behaviour suggests he is probably married, then chucks her job and begins to live off Walter's largesse.

Voyage in the Dark is extremely reminiscent of Rhys' earlier novel After Leaving Mr. Mackenzie
