Lucifer Box is the darling of the Edwardian belle monde: portrait painter, wit, dandy and rake- the guest all hostesses must have. And most do.

But few of his connections or conquests know that Lucifer Box is also His Majesty's most daring secret agent, at home in both London's Imperial grandeur and the underworld of crazed vice that seethes beneath.

And so of course when Britain's most prominent scientists begin turning up dead, there is only one man his country can turn to.

Lucifer Box ruthlessly deduces and seduces his way from his elegant townhouse at Number 9 Downing Street (somebody has to live there), to the seediest stews in Naples, in search of the mighty secret society that may hold the fate of the world in its claw-like hands- The Vesuvius Club.

I loved this book, so I'm offering it as an International Bookring so that others can enjoy it too. It's written by one of main guys behind The League of Gentlemen Mark Gatiss, so if you have ever seen any of The League on TV, then you will have an idea of the humour in this book.

I bought it originally just because I liked the cover. It wasn't until I'd brough it home that I discovered who had written it!

Please read and enjoy and send on. Spread the word, as it were!

Journal Entry 5 by NeedSun from Perth Road, Ontario Canada on Monday, November 21, 2005
I loved Lucifer Box, cad that he is. The book was not a real page turner even though I thought the story was quite original. I hope to see many more tales in this series from Mark Gatiss.

I thought I would put link to the list of participants here:

Participant list

I sent this book, today, to Jianji. Because this book is so slim, it went as a letter which is supposedly airmail. I hope they journalize it as soon as they get it so I can see how long it took.

Journal Entry 6 by jianji from Sioux Falls, South Dakota USA on Wednesday, November 30, 2005
Received this book either on Friday, November 25th or Saturday, November 26th. I had lots of relatives and guests in my home over the holiday and I forgot to bring in my mail.

The mail from Canada to the US certainly moves quickly. I sent a book to Dunzy on August 3rd and he didn't get it until August 23rd!

Journal Entry 10 by sadogs from Telford , Shropshire United Kingdom on Friday, April 28, 2006
I really battled throught the first few chapters - but once I got into it I couldn't put it down and then finished quite quickly. Will contact Nell-Lu for her details and post on after the weekend. Thanks arisweeting.

Journal Entry 11 by Nell-Lu from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Saturday, May 6, 2006
This arrived today - thanks arisweeting for sharing and sadogs for passing it on to me. There's a great collection of bookmarks with this book!

I also received two other bookray books today, and I'm afraid this one was opened third so I'll read it third. I should get on to it by the end of next week. I'm looking forward to it.

Journal Entry 12 by Nell-Lu from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Friday, May 12, 2006
What fun! I enjoyed this - the tone of voice is deliciously OTT and the outragous plot fast paced and entertaining. Plus, the Beardsley-esque illustrations are gorgeous. I hope there will be more Lucifer Box novels. Thanks, arisweeting, for sharing.

Princey has asked to be skipped, so I have packaged this up ready to go to deadendmind. I'll take it to the Post Office this afternoon.

Journal Entry 13 by deadendmind from Athens - Αθήνα, Attica Greece on Sunday, May 21, 2006
I received this on Friday, but forgot to journal it.
I'm afraid I will keep it for a while, as I have a lot of studying and exams at this time. I'm sorry.
I will try to get on with it quickly.

Thank you!

Journal Entry 14 by deadendmind from Athens - Αθήνα, Attica Greece on Wednesday, June 7, 2006
Unfortunately, I will not be able to read this. I'm in the middle of exams and I have another 4 bookrings before it. I decided not to keep it for so long so I'm sending it on to librarymousie.

Enjoy!

Journal Entry 15 by librarymousie from Portsmouth, New Hampshire USA on Sunday, June 18, 2006
Arrived sometime last week and my husband neglected to tell me--what a naughty boy! Anyway, I'm nearly finished with my current read and am anxious to begin this immediately thereafter!

Journal Entry 16 by librarymousie from Portsmouth, New Hampshire USA on Monday, July 3, 2006
Oh, what fun. I, too, am hoping for more of Lucifer Box in all of his delightful awfulness. This was fabulously entertaining, witty and all-around good means of escaping the things I should have been doing this weekend (Hmmm....clean the kitchen or finish novel.....hmmmmm). Thanks so much for sharing, arisweeting.

I am off to PM LindyLouMac for a mailing address, and this will be continuing on to Italy (no irony there, eh?) for the next leg of its journey.

Journal Entry 17 by librarymousie from Portsmouth, New Hampshire USA on Thursday, July 13, 2006
OK--after a couple of false starts, this is going to go in the mail today. LindyLouMac is unable to receive items from outside the EU at this point in time due to some sort of hideous tax. After talking to arisweeting and Zenita, and working out some switching, I think everything is all set now :)

New order for the end of the ring is:

Zenita (Denmark)
LindyLouMac (Italy)
Rudifun23 (UK)

...and back to arisweeting.

So sorry for the delay while getting everything worked out. To make up for lost time, I'll send this Global Priority Mail, so it should get overseas within a week or two.

Journal Entry 18 by Zenita from København K - City, København Amt Denmark on Thursday, July 20, 2006
Arrived in the mail today.

Journal Entry 19 by Zenita from København K - City, København Amt Denmark on Thursday, October 5, 2006
Sorry for the late journal entry, I've been a really lazy bookcrosser lately.

Read the book a month ago and found it very enjoyable.

Journal Entry 20 by Zenita from København K - City, København Amt Denmark on Saturday, October 28, 2006
And the book is finaly of to Italy.

Posted it 27/10.

Journal Entry 21 by LindyLouMac from Tywyn, Wales United Kingdom on Friday, November 3, 2006
Arrived safely on 31/10/06 and I am just about to start reading. Thanks to airsweeting, librarymousie and Zenita for sorting out the list to cope with my awkward preferences.

Journal Entry 22 by LindyLouMac from Tywyn, Wales United Kingdom on Sunday, November 5, 2006
I am really not sure now what atttracted me to this title, as it is very different from the sort of books you will usually find me reading. I suspect it was the Italian connection! Anyway it was an amusing read.
Once I have heard from Rudifun23 with a mailing address it will be off on its travels again,
Update:07/11/06 Rudifun23 has already read this title, so it will now be winging its way home to arisweeting. I have already done the post office run for Bookcrossing this week so it will be posted next Monday. I should have the address to post it to by then!
