On the hottest day of the summer of 1934 13 year old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching her is Robbie Turner, her childhood friend who, like Cecilia has recently come down from Cambridge.

By the end of that day the lives of all three will have changed forever....

Picked this up at the BookCrossing stall at Mozfest today - I see you picked up one of mine too Ali!

Started reading it this afternoon, while enjoying a glass of white wine at Sibila's restaurant by one of Birmingham's many canals :-)

This is the first book I have read by Ian McKewan and I thought it was great! Beautifully written, and really quite tragic, with an interesting twist - or rather a change of perspective - at the end.

Also the first time I've read about the real horrors of the Dunkirk evacuation, very enlightening.

Thanks for sharing Ali!

Picked up at Hudson's a while ago, whoops!Having read The Cement Garden I was intrigued to see if this was as good.I really enjoyed reading it and found the end section of the book very thought provoking.
In view of the imminent release of the film based on the book I'm offering this as a book-ray.

Received safely via Katisha50, thank you! I am approaching this with mixed feelings. I hated 'Amsterdam' and 'First love, Last Rites', and thought 'Enduring Love' was anti-climatic. But so many McEwan fans have told me this is his best book that I'm giving him one last chance LOL!

Finally finished reading this and posted it off to Megmac yesterday.

I felt this book was far too long and, with the exception of the part when Briony comits her 'crime', very tedious. I think I can safely say I just can't get on with this author's works. However, despite myself, I did find myself enjoying the very evocative and beautiful descriptions of the English summer in which the main event of the book takes part.

Thanks again Kazbag for letting me join the ring.

The first 100 pages I found incredibly dull but once the crime is committed the story picks up (stick with it!). It is beautifully written and tragic without being cloying. I'm very interested to see the film since I presume it will cut out the dull beginning, but I'm very glad I read the book first.

I have pm-ed birmingham-rose.
