Set in the Gulf Stream off the coast of Havana, Hemingway's magnificant fable is the story of an old man, a young boy and a giant fish. In a perfectly crafted story which won the Nobel Prize for Literature, its a unique and timeless vision of the beauty and grief of man's challenge to the elements in which he lives.

*The copy I have is not exactly brand new', but definately readable...it's a penguin 1976 edition...no pic was available

Wonderful timing, Gussy916! This came just one day after my graduation and while I was sick with the flu (still am) so it really was something! Very happy to be your first bookringer! Fever didn't really help me read it, but I've only got a few pages left... And I loved the postcard! :-)

"But man is not made for defeat", he said. "A man can be destroyed but not defeated".

The Old Man is ready to sail again!
After two weeks being sick and with an awful cough still torturing me, I can finally pass this lovely little Penguin on to the next BCrosser. (By the way, Gussy916 - old books have a magic of their own, don't you think? I became a book-o-holic reading my father's old books and I just loved your copy of The Old Man and the Sea).
The book was in my list of half-read books for years. I don't normally quit reading books, even the ones that I hate, but this... Well, I guess I was quite different then (or just a child - 14 I think I was) to appreciate it. I joined this bookring thinking it would worth a second try, as I've really enjoyed other Hemingway's books. Joining proved a good idea. Hemingway is perhaps too detailed for some people to enjoy but he is also precise and passionate, often fascinating, and his writing reveals a deep respect of human beings that I find admirable.
Thanks for sharing this, Gussy916! PMed Nell-Lu and hopefully the book will be there in time for Christmas or New Year's. Until I have Nell-Lu's address, the book will remain reserved. Keep your spirit, everyone!

P.S. Thank you very much for the previous journal, too. Positive energy from other people really helps!

This arrived today - thank you, travellinglight, for sending it to me and for the handpainted postcard. Merry Christmas to you too! Thanks also, gussy916, for starting the ring.

I'm going away for Christmas, so I'll read this and many other books over the break. I won't have a chance to make a journal entry and send this on to the next person until I get back on 04 January 2006, sorry about that.

This is a beautiful, dense little book. The writing is lovely and very detailed. I hadn't read any Hemmingway before so this has inspired me to get hold of some of his other fiction. Thanks, gussy916!

I've sent it off to Izzles this afternoon. Happy reading...

A delightful copy of a beautiful little story! I echo travellinglight's sentiments on old books, reading this copy really added to the story but I do hope it doesn't fall apart anytime soon. Thank you so much gussy916 for including me in your bookring.

Sent off to Qantaqa this morning.

Not my type of book - I think I just don't like parables... I really enjoyed "A Moveable Feast" by Hemingway, though - so I sort of expected to love this book as much, but well, it can't be helped.

"The old man and the sea" is a great book, that is the reason why I want read it but Hemingway is an auther who is not easy to read, especially not for me. So I read at least half of the book and I wont finish it. But my boyfriend read it and he found it very good and he learned English with it. So I will send it to the next person on the list.

I loved this story, it's a fantastically written account of an old mans battle to catch the big fish and bring it home. The gentle way in which it is written made me really empathise with the characters, and made me really quite sad in parts.

Thanks Gussy916 for sharing this book, will post it off to conversasdecafe this afternoon.

Sorry for holding the book for so long... I'm waiting for the next bookcrosser address to send it. I think this is a very dense book. It was the my first Hemingway book but I didn't like it so much as I was thinking. Although, this was a great chance to know a little of Hemingway's style. Thank you so much gussy916 for this bookring! And again: I'm sorry for been slow.

It is a deeply moving little story, isn't it? You feel badly for the fish, for the old man, then for all the sharks, and then ultimately for the old man again. Yet at the same time, you enjoy the old man's success at finally capturing the fish and returning semi-triumphant.

I also liked the fact that AJ (who is 7) pointed out that her book is twice as thick as mine this afternoon! In tones of amazement! LOL. I'm so pleased to be the mother of a reader that I just had to share that with you all.

This lovely book is ready to head home, and it is certainly holding up well, given its' age (one year younger than me!). Thank you for the ring, gussy.
