I adore David Sedaris. I will read anything he writes. This one did not disappoint though I have to admit that my favorite is still 'Me Talk Pretty One Day'! Read this book--you'll like it!

I started reading this book just to get a taste of it before getting to my textbook for my upcoming final. It wasn't an easy start. Fot whatever reason, the stories weren't engaging me, and I wasn't finding them funny. I decided to read some more to see if I should just scrap it altogether, and the strangest thing happened. Each story got progressively funnier, so much so that I have now finished this book without yet getting to my textbook.

There were many insightful stories. I really liked the bit about schools having celebrity circles and it never occuring to David Sedaris that other schools might have their own celebrity circles. "I thought the group at E. C. Brooks was if not nationally known, then at least its own private phenomenon. Why else would our lives revolve around it so completely?" That's good stuff. Six to Eight Black Men was possibly my favorite story (hard to choose) and is probably worth another read before this puppy moves on.

Not sure what I'll be doing with this one now. Stay tuned..

The List
1. BethanieKay - USA - (international)
2. klaradyn - South Africa - (international)
3. sudokugirl - Bosnia-Herzegovina - (international)
4. babyimran - Malaysia - (prefers Asia/ Australia/ Europe)

Just a few bookring guidelines:
-- Journal the book as soon as you receive it, and contact the next person for their mailing address.
-- Take as much time as you need, but try to read within 4-6 weeks so the ring keeps moving along.
-- Take a moment to journal your thoughts on the book when finished. It's interesting to read other's feelings on the book too!

Journal Entry 10 by BethanieKay from Melbourne, Florida USA on Monday, August 4, 2008
Book arrived today! Will start soon ....

Journal Entry 11 by BethanieKay from Melbourne, Florida USA on Thursday, August 14, 2008
Finished this book yesterday ... some parts were funny, but others just did not make me laugh out loud like I expected they would. This was my first book by this author, and I guess I thought it would have me rolling on the floor laughing. Oh well, I'm willing to try more ... but so far, the only story that made me laugh was the one about "what do roosters say in your country?" and how the whole Santa Claus / opening gifts thing works.

Have PM'd next in line, but haven't heard back yet.

Gobbled this up in one sitting - it was very enjoyable. I like Sedaris' strange humour, and also the incredibly poignant endings of some of his essays. Like a previous journaller said, there is some very insightful commentary in many of the stories.
My favourite was probably "Monie Changes Everything", about his rich great-aunt. Such a sad ending!

I already have the address for the next reader, and will send the book out by the end of the week (26 September at the latest).

Will be posted to the next reader just after I finish work. I'm going to use surface mail, as the book is a bit too heavy for airmail. Unfortunately that means it will take a couple of months to arrive. Sorry about that!
