I read this for book group last winter after hearing so much about it. I really enjoyed it. The story is two young men (older teenagers, really) who are sent out to a remote moutain village to be "re-educated" during the Cultural Revolution in China. It was fascinating to read and suddenly realize what a privilege it is to read and to live in any intellectual capacity, and even more, how easily it was taken away from so many. The ending was a rather sudden jolt of reality and didn't seem to quite fit in but I still enjoyed the book immensely.

Adding to my to be read bookshelf

Journal Entry 7 by GirlieGoalie from Nashua, New Hampshire USA on Friday, May 25, 2007
After reading several romance novels, I went to my bookshelf looking for a change in pace and picked up this book.

I honestly don't know what I thought the book was about. I liked the cover and had heard that it was a good book, but aside from that I tend to just pick up a book and start reading with no idea what the story will be about. In the case of this book, I barely put the book back down.

I'm not sure what to say about the book that made it so interesting. The time and place were areas I don't know anything about, making the setting just as intriguing as the characters and their interactions.

I think a friend picked this up when I was moving.
