I found this rather battered paperback on the bargain rack at a local bookstore. I've loved Gallico's work for decades, and had read and enjoyed this (rather dark) fable long ago, but it was nice to find an affordable release copy. A young orphan girl finds a home with a traveling carnival after her naive, trusting response to the puppets impresses the owner. But while the puppets adore the girl, the puppeteer is a bitter, angry man who can't bear any hint of sweetness; he tries to drive it out of the girl by verbal and physical cruelty, and worse. [Whether one can accept that she can forgive all this or not may affect one's impression of the story; it's not realistic nor politically correct, but it does play on some strong wish-fulfillment fantasies...]

The film Lili was based on this story - though it pulled some punches regarding the degree of abuse suffered by the heroine. Might make the story easier to take!

I'm offering this for a bookray (see forum post here).

Bookray/ring instructions:

When you receive the book, please journal it, and PM the next person in line for their address so you'll have it ready when you've finished the book.
Note: even if you've sent books to that person before, please PM them before mailing this one, to confirm that the address is correct and that they're able to take on a bookring book at this time.
Try and read the book promptly - ideally, within a month of receiving it. (If you expect to take longer, you can request to be put at the end of the list. If you find you're swamped with other books when the person before you contacts you about the bookring, you can ask to be skipped, and then let me know whether you'd like to be moved down the list or dropped entirely. If you receive the book and find it's taking longer than you'd planned to get through it, I'd appreciate an update in its journal entries or on your profile, just to let me and the other participants know you haven't forgotten it.)

When you're ready to pass the book along, please make another journal entry containing your comments about the book and stating where you've sent it, and set the book's status code to "traveling". [If you find that you're having problems contacting the next person in line, or don't think you can manage to mail the book as originally agreed, please let me know; I'll be glad to try to work something out.]

Magically appeared in my mailbox! I love this movie; I never even noticed that it was based on a book...thanks for sharing, GD!

Oh - just noticed that the next person in line is going to be on vacation until August 18th, so I'll sit on this until she gets back, since she's last on the list.

8 September '06 - This was wonderful (but quite awful at times) - I "need" to see the movie again and am now on a hunt for a copy of the book to hoard for a while. Will send soon.

16 September '06 - Mailed today; sorry for the delay.

I just received this book today. I noticed I am the last one on this list. So I am going to catch up on some reading before I read this one.
