I found this good-condition (and very odd) hardcover on the bargain shelves at Toadstool Books in Milford. The title sums it up; it's a stormy night, and the main character is getting ready for bed in what appears to be a somewhat isolated house in the country. The child hops into bed but then begins to think about things - questions of all kinds, from "Where does infinity end?" to "am I nice-looking?", each with an accompanying illustration. The questions range from frivolous to serious - concerns about the future, about loss and loneliness and death - and the whole thing rather neatly sums up some of those long, wakeful nights that I remember. A very unusual book. Don't know what I'd have made of it as a kid; maybe it's to remind adults what it was like...

I'm offering this for a bookring; see forum post here.

Bookray/ring instructions:

When you receive the book, please journal it, and PM the next person in line for their address so you'll have it ready when you've finished the book.
Note: even if you've sent books to that person before, please PM them before mailing this one, to confirm that the address is correct and that they're able to take on a bookring book at this time.
Try and read the book promptly - ideally, within a month of receiving it. (If you expect to take longer, you can request to be put at the end of the list. If you find you're swamped with other books when the person before you contacts you about the bookring, you can ask to be skipped, and then let me know whether you'd like to be moved down the list or dropped entirely. If you receive the book and find it's taking longer than you'd planned to get through it, I'd appreciate an update in its journal entries or on your profile, just to let me and the other participants know you haven't forgotten it.)

When you're ready to pass the book along, please make another journal entry containing your comments about the book and stating where you've sent it, and set the book's status code to "traveling". [If you find that you're having problems contacting the next person in line, or don't think you can manage to mail the book as originally agreed, please let me know; I'll be glad to try to work something out.]

Just received this - on a non-stormy night!

Don't know what I'd have made of it as a kid; maybe it's to remind adults what it was like...

If that was the book's purpose, it succeeded! I remember asking a lot of these questions; many I still ask.

I like the drawings very much. They range from a simple line drawing of a mother cradling her child in her arms to spooky skeletons and a devil rolling up the earth.

I'd really like to find a copy of this to keep.

just rec'd - I'll read it myself first and then judge whether to share it with my child

Received from Cherylllr on this blustery night. I have 2 other books I'm reading, but this will be easy to squeeze in.

Thanks so much for sharing this with us, GoryDetails! I enjoyed the walk down memory lane in regards to some of those long, sleepless nights as a child pondering life.

I'm going to see if I can find a copy of my own.

This was put in the mail today.

I was more than excited to find this package sitting on my bed when I got home this evening! It was returned, resent, erroneously reported delivered, missing, and now somehow has ended up here, with a Dec 18 postmark. Looking forward to reading it with Wolfboy a few times. Judging from the first few pages, this may be one I'll have to end up finding and buying.

Sorry for the delays. With the various holiday madnesses (working at Hallmark) and being sick the last couple month or so, it's been hard for me to get myself out.
However, it has been getting warm-ish the last couple days, and I finally took this to the post office this evening after work.
Thank you so much for allowing me to read it, and to share it with my son.
