From Booklist
A man's desperate search for his identity drives this riveting offering from the author of best-sellers Where the Heart Is (1995) and The Honk and Holler Opening Soon (1998). No one in sleepy DeClare, Oklahoma, has forgotten the 1972 murder of pretty Cherokee Gaylene Harjo and the abduction of her infant son, Nicky Jack. Hard-nosed deputy sheriff Oliver "O Boy" Daniels pinned the blame on local preacher Joe Dawson, but few in town believed the kindly Joe was capable of such an act. Powerful emotions resurface 30 years later, when Nicky Jack, adopted and raised by a rich couple in Beverly Hills, mysteriously reappears, determined to learn about his mother and the circumstances surrounding her death. Veteran short-story writer Letts peppers her prose with a cast of quirky characters, including a quartet of nosy, domino-playing senior citizens and a perky pool-hall owner who bakes peanut-butter pies. Readers of Sue Miller and Wally Lamb are sure to embrace this memorable tale of love, loss, humanity, and hope.
A really good story and a great listen. Lou Diamond Phillips does a great job with the narration.
Sending off to narfinmagic.

Heading off as part of a trade to Folia in Canada :o)
That was fast! I'm afraid you're gonna have to be more patient than me... I sent yours by surface mail. I love the bookmark! Thanks much!
I agree with all previous entries - a really enjoyable "read", and Lou Diamnond Phillips is a very good reader. It's actually hard to stop listening to it, since you always want to know what's gonna happen next. So you end up listening to two disks in a row, not doing all the other things you have to do!
Promised to carlissa as part of a trade.

Wow, for a book that has been around for so long and gone through so many hands, it is in very good condition. I loved Where The Heart is, and reading the journals, seems like I won't be disappointed with this one.
A few chapters into the book, I thought, hmm, I didn't realize this is a mystery. Where the Heart is certainly is not. And I am not a mystery fan. Fortunately for me, while the murder drives the plot, the story is too slow paced to be called a mystery.
The reader is definitely the best. I didn't realize he is such a celebrity till I google him. The range of voices is amazing, a couple of times I even wondered if there are several readers. One complain though, Gaylene's voice sounds too young for someone supposedly entering college soon. Overall it's a fine novel, though the reading certainly boost its points.
For audio books, the reader can make or break it, and here, Lou Diamond Phillips simply did an excellent job . The plot itself is quite interesting too, making for a totally captivating listen.

All righty then. I apparently took this out of an audio bookbox and didn't journal it. I am soooo sorry. I am presently listening to it and as I will have a bit of a commute for the next twoo weeks I should finish in no time.

An excellent audio book. The reader, Lou Diamond Philips did a fantastic job with voices, tones, pacing, etc. The story itself was captivating. I found myself sitting in my car when I got where I was going to hear just a bit more.

Received in exchange from NMReader for The Ghost Map. I've read a couple of Billie Letts books and enjoyed them, but just bailed on another audio book of hers because I couldn't bear the reader. Hope this is like the former, not the latter!
Thanks NMReader!

Billie Letts does small town America very well. This book took us to a small, close-knit town in Oklahoma where secrets are many and the Oakie twang is thick.
The story and mystery behind it all was intriguing, but more interesting to me was the interplay between characters, old relationships, blood relationships etc. I thought both Letts and the reader (Lou Diamond Phillips) did an exceptional job portraying Kippy.
All in all 6 hours of good listening.
Will pass along probably in another book box.
