8 out of 10

One of those books that I have meant to read for years. Having tried a number of times to read Henry James, I found this a much easier novel with themes that are similar to James. Don't expect huge plot development or searing critique of a ratified class of society - Wharton has a compassionate view of Old New York society and holds out hope that the moral rectitude of the old with the greater freedoms of the new would create a stronger community.
For me the weakness was that she does not allow the characters and plot and most particularly the dialogue to show the reader what could be a brutally stifling society. She feels the need to tell us the reader rather than allowing us to see it through the characters.

Arrived safe and sound today. The book I sent in trade was sent at the end of November. It looks like whereever you send from that darn ocean just gets in the way. :)

Thank you for the lovely letter. You will be interested to know that I live very close to "that shopping mall". I feel as if I've grown up there. :)

My large TBR pile has again become unmanageable. I will look for a new home for this book. :)
