I enjoyed this book although it wasn't what I expected. Some of the examples were quite eye-opening to this small town girl.

A collection of columns Mayle wrote for GQ magazine about the expensive things in life. Some of them are just sheer extravagance (like eating caviar and truffles, or taking your stretch limo for a walk), but others actually work out as pretty good value for money, if only you could afford the initial price (like the £750 pair of handmade shoes that would last you 20 years).

A few of the columns (especially the food ones) were pretty much straight lifts from A Year in Provence, and some felt a bit like fillers written when he couldn't be bothered to go out and research a particular luxury, but otherwise it was an interesting glimpse at how the other half live.
