Teaser from the back cover: "Twenty years ago, Jane Hudson fled the Heart Lake School for Girls in the Adirondacks after a terrible tragedy. The week before her graduation, in that sheltered wonderland, three lives were taken, all victims of suicide. Only Jane was left to carry the burden of a mystery that has stayed hidden in the depths of Heart Lake for more than two decades. Now Jane has returned to the school as a Latin teacher, recently separated and hoping to make a fresh start with her young daughter. But ominous messages from the past dredge up forgotten memories. And young, troubled girls are beginning to die again–as piece by piece the shattering truth slowly floats to the surface..." I read this book about a year ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not Nobel Prize winning literature, but it is an entertaining read that will keep you interested. I think I'll be ready to read it again by the time it gets back from its travels around the world.

Wow! I really enjoyed this book. Considering I'd never heard of it and joined the bookring on a whim, I was very impressed. It had me gripped from the beginning and kept twisting and turning all the way through. I didn't expect the ending at all (won't spoil it for anyone) and it was a really good surprise. The only thing that made it a 9, not a 10, for me was that I believe it is one of those books which is better when you don't know what's going to come next. Sometimes the joy is in knowing what the narrator of the story does not. I think this one benefits from being as in the dark as Jane is and enjoying the mystery and horror with her. Sent to tabbystripes yesterday.

This book arrived with a loud thud on the door-mat this morning, and in perfect condition thanks to Scarlett17 wrapping it so carefully in bubble-wrap. I've got 50 pages left of my current book and then I'll get right on this. I'm really looking forward to reading it especially after seeing the reviews.

One of my favourite books of 2005! I'm so glad I signed up for this bookring. The story keeps you interested all the way through, especially with all the twists and turns. I loved all the wonderful descriptions of ice and snow throughout the book. Carol Goodman's descriptive powers are so good that she could even make me feel chilly while reading it, snuggled up in bed. Despite guessing who the 'baddie' was, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and I was sad when I came to the end of the book. I will definitely be reading Carol Goodman's other novel, "The Seduction of Water." The book has also left me with a desire to learn latin and I'll be looking into night-school classes in the new year. Morsecode, thank you! thank you! thank you! for releasing this book as a bookring. Now back on your travels...... in the post to cloggy today.

A gripping story, which makes you want to keep turning the pages. Unlike the previous reader, I did suspect the ending and some of the twists, but the way the novel is written means I was pleased when I was right, rather than disappointed. A perfect book to read in winter, the ice on the lake almost a character in its own right. Very enjoyable. In the post to AmberC 14/12

I enjoyed this book and found it atmospheric and the landscape of the lake beautifully evoked. Quite an alien landscape to what most of us Aussies are used to. I also found the story very interesting but perhaps just a little too long. I will definitely, though, be reading The Seduction of Water.

The Lake of Dead Languages is a haunting mystery that takes place at Heart Lake School for Girls. It begins when Jane is a student there -- several of her classmates and best friends die in tragic circumstances. It continues when Jane returns to the school as the Latin teacher -- several students begin repeating the events of that horrible year. Even more frightening, Jane begins receiving the pages of her journal from that year -- it has been missing for 20 years. Jane must try to solve the present-day mystery by unraveling the threads of the past. Before more girls -- or Jane herself -- ends up dead. *** Many of the plot twists and turns were expected ones -- I foretold early in the book who the villian was and also most of the story from Jane's school days. However, the book was still worth reading. Moody and descriptive, it had moments of suspense and also some of tenderness and humor. The events of Jane's time at the school were truly tragic and I was left with quite mixed feelings about her schoolmates, one in particular.

I apologize for keeping this book so long, My job required me to travel much more than expected this summer. I enjoyed reading this book. The story was predictable but the writing and the main character were interesting enough to keep me coming back to the story. Loved reading about the snow in the heat of summer! Thanks morsecode for sharing! Mailed to Lil-Snoo earlier today.

What a gripping and suspenseful novel! I'm so glad I read this! It helped take my mind off the stress of my wedding two weeks ago (sorry for the slight delay in getting the book read!). It did tend to be predictable at times, but that certainly didn't affect my enjoyment of the book. Will send it back home to morsecode shortly...
