Picture the scene: Aunt Gertrude has just given you the most appalling Christmas tie, complete with snow-flecked kittens in a bowler hat. Do you smile, nod, and confine it to the bottom drawer? Or do you tell the truth and spare yourself future ties from hell? Kant would say that we must, at all costs, tell the truth -- whilst Mill would insist that we should think of the consequences.
The Xmas Files is a philosophical meander through the myths and riturals of Christmas today, asking such imporant questions as, Does Santa exist? What's wrong with Christmas kitsch? Is it all just a commercial racket? What was Augustine's attitude to 'peace on earth'? And what would David Hume have to say about the virgin bith?
For underneath all the festive fun, the way we celebrate Christmas does raise serious questions about hte beliefs that sustain us, and the way in which we still value ritual and tradition as a means of coming together.

I picked this up at the book outlet and I thought it would make a nice book ring in preparation for the holidays.

(personally I smile and graciously say thank you for all the atrocious things that my relatives give me for Christmas, but I am very happy that I am married now and can use that as an excuse to say home with my husband and not have to put on a show for all of my paternal relations)

I honestly expected something different but the book's nice; I'm sorry for taking so long to read it but it's travelling to Wales now..

6 out of 10

Not the light hearted Christmas book I expected. Having said that it was enjoyable and I learned a couple of things. Having read a book about the Science of Christmas this put a balance on things.

Posted to Canada.

5 out of 10

I stopped reading this last night about 3/4 of the way through. Although I like the premise of analyzing Christmas this book wasn't entirely what I expected. A little too slow and serious I think. Also, I realized that I am one of those people who likes the Christmas 'kitsch' (except for the round robin letters) and I like the family holidays time in general.

I also lie when I don't like a present. There. I've admitted it. I can't stand to hurt someone's feelings when they've spent time selecting a gift for me!

Thank you Susan, for organizing this and giving me a chance to read it; I'm going to be sending it along today or tomorrow!

Hmmm, a lot of this was a bit tough for me to chew-perhaps I'm just a sappy traditionalist that likes trees, gifts, family and the true meaning of the holiday. Thanks for giving me a chance to read this little piece of work!

I'm guessing this book is lost in the mail since it was mailed 4 months ago and even media mail does not take that long.
I'm sending it to Lost Book Island.

Journal Entry 13 by lostbookisland on Monday, September 25, 2006

This book has not been rated.

This book has washed ashore at the Lost Book Island after not being heard from for many months. This new arrival will be shown to a room and be allowed a bit of rest before being introduced to the many fun things to do here at the island.

All around there are books sipping cool drinks under shady palms while other books participate in a wide variety of beach sports. There is plenty of sand, surf and sun here for all of the lost and wayward books to enjoy.

It is hoped that very soon a new journal entry will come to rescue this book from the island and send it back out into the BookCrossing world so that it may continue on its journey. It is hoped that the new journal entry will tell all the interested parties where this book has been this long time and where it will be traveling to next.
